Excessive oil consumption — the year's dominant complaint, and its consequence
CoveredRead the 2019 file and the same sentence appears in a dozen forms: a quart every 700 miles, a litre every 1,000, five quarts added in a week, metal shavings found in the oil, one owner in seven times for the same issue, another whose engine Hyundai replaced under warranty for oil consumption only for the problem to return. This is not a nuisance, it is the early stage of the failure that made this generation famous. Theta II is Hyundai's four-cylinder engine family; in the 2.4-litre GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) version the connecting-rod bearings — the metal shells the piston rods spin on — wear early when oil is low or dirty, producing a knock and eventually a seized engine. The independent mechanic in our sources says it directly: make sure it is not burning oil, because that will accelerate rod bearing failure. Hyundai's protection is Service Campaign 966, which installs KSDS — the Knock Sensor Detection System, software that listens for the vibration of early bearing wear and drops the engine into a protection mode — and a warranty extension on the engine long block for rod-bearing damage, raised in stages to 10 years/120,000 miles, then 15 years/150,000 miles, then a Limited Lifetime Warranty valid for original and subsequent owners. The 15-year tier's bulletin lists model years 2016 to 2019, so the 2019 is squarely inside it. Confirm which tier applies to the VIN with Hyundai.

White paint peeling — and the warranty extension owners call "Z05"
The second-largest 2019 cluster, and it has real coverage behind it. Hyundai's bulletins state that certain vehicles with exterior white paint may show peeling or bubbling of the primer and paint film on the metal body panels — hood, fenders, roof, doors, quarter panels and trunk lid — and that the paint warranty for affected cars was extended, applying only to factory-applied paint. The Sonata bulletins cover model years 2015 to 2019. Owners in the complaint file reference it by Hyundai's internal code, Z05. The published summaries do not state how long the extension runs, so verify the terms in the bulletin PDF with a dealer rather than taking a number off a forum. If you are looking at a white 2019, walk the hood and roof edges in daylight before you talk price.

Steering that sticks off-centre
A small but distinctive cluster. Owners describe the steering feeling sticky after a slight turn once the car has warmed up, or staying held a couple of inches off-centre so the wheel has to be pulled back manually. A community mechanic channel independently flags the steering coupler on 2015 to 2018 cars as prone to disintegrating and leaving play in the wheel. On the test drive, make a series of small corrections at speed and in a car park, and treat a wheel that does not self-centre smoothly as something to have inspected before you buy.
