Reliability report · 2023 Hyundai Sonata · Updated July 2026 · ~$2,000/yr fuel · what it costs to keep →

The quietest Sonata in our set — two fire-risk recalls to close and one part to ask about: the injectors.

The 2023 is the calmest Sonata in our data — 83 complaints on the gas car and 15 on the hybrid, against 872 across the range in 2017 and 185 at the redesign in 2020. Nothing in it resembles the engine saga of the previous generation.

Two recalls carry real consequence, and both are fire risks. Recall 25V796 covers a fuel tank that can expand into hot exhaust and melt. Recall 23V526 covers the Idle Stop & Go system's electric oil-pump controller, which can overheat — Hyundai advises owners to park outside and away from structures until it is fixed. Close both by VIN. Then ask one question about the engine: have the fuel injectors been replaced, and if so, when.

Canary status

Chirping

What that means: 98 federal complaints, the lowest of the eight years we track, and only two recalls. Both are fire-risk campaigns worth taking seriously: the fuel tank that can melt against hot exhaust, and an Idle Stop & Go oil-pump controller that can overheat, with a park-outside advisory. Beyond those, the recurring owner complaint is fuel injectors failing on the 2.5-litre engine — covered by a Hyundai bulletin, and by warranty on most cars at this age.

Idle Stop & Go oil-pump controller can overheat and cause a fire (recall 23V526)

major

Recall 23V526 covers 2023 to 2024 Palisade and Tucson and 2023 Sonata, Elantra and Kona: the electronic controller for the Idle Stop & Go oil pump assembly may contain damaged electrical components that can cause the controller to overheat, which raises the risk of a vehicle fire. Idle Stop & Go is the system that shuts the engine off at a red light and restarts it when you lift off the brake; the electric oil pump keeps oil pressure up while the engine is stopped. Hyundai advises owners to park outside and away from structures until the repair is complete, and dealers inspect and replace the controller free. Owner letters went out from September 2023. A park-outside advisory is the strongest signal NHTSA and a manufacturer give short of a stop-drive — treat an unclosed 23V526 as a reason not to buy the car until it is done.

Fuel tank can expand, contact hot exhaust and melt (recall 25V796)major

The generation-wide fuel-tank recall reaches the 2023 as its final model year. Hyundai states that a damaged check valve can allow air into the fuel tank, causing it to expand and contact hot exhaust components, melting the tank — and a melted tank can leak, raising the risk of fire. The remedy is a free check-valve inspection and replacement, fuel-tank inspection and replacement if damaged, and an engine-computer software update. VINs became searchable on 19 November 2025 and letters went out from 13 March 2026, so many 2023s will still be waiting. One 2023 owner filed against it after the failure spread: recall 286, as Hyundai numbers it internally, causing a heat-module failure, a cylinder-two misfire and high-pressure fuel trouble. Check the VIN before you view the car.

Fuel injectors leak internally and cause misfires — the year's signature owner complaintmajor

  • 2.5L GDI Theta III (gen 8)

This is what 2023 owners actually write about. Hyundai's bulletin names the mechanism exactly: vehicles with the 2.5-litre GDI Theta III engine — GDI meaning Gasoline Direct Injection, and this is the naturally aspirated version, not the turbo — may show one or more misfire codes because the direct-injection fuel injectors are leaking internally, caused by the injector's internal filter breaking apart. The fix is to replace all four injectors. The bulletin covers 2021 to 2023. Owners describe losing power at highway speed, the car sputtering at a stoplight, jerky acceleration and deceleration with a check-engine light, and repeat failures — one had injectors fail twice within sixteen months. On a car of this age most of these are warranty repairs, which is precisely why you should ask whether the work has been done rather than discover it later. Get any stored codes read and ask for the service history.

N Line: the eight-speed wet dual-clutch and its oil pumpmajor

  • 2.5L Turbo + 8-speed wet DCT (gen 8)

The 2023 N Line keeps the 2.5-litre turbo and the eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic. It falls outside recall 22V746, which stops at 2022, but the underlying part story continues in Hyundai's bulletins: cars setting high-pressure electric oil pump codes can require the whole gearbox replaced, moisture in the oil-pump connector corrodes the terminals, and a software update revising clutch touch-point learning to improve judder covers model years from 2021 onward, with some gearboxes receiving a redesigned clutch spring. A 2023 owner names it plainly, calling the problem common on Hyundai and Kia vehicles with the Theta III 2.5-litre turbo engine, and other filings describe the car jerking and then dropping into limp mode. On an N Line, drive it from cold in traffic, feel for shudder, and ask whether the transmission software has been updated.

Hybrid: coolant loss with white smoke, and the 12-volt batterymoderate

  • Hybrid (gen 8)

The 2023 Sonata Hybrid's 15 complaints repeat the generation's two hybrid faults. Coolant disappears and the exhaust blows white smoke — Hyundai's bulletin covers 2020 to 2023 Sonata Hybrids and attributes it to an internal leak at the EHRS, the Exhaust Heat Recovery System built into the centre muffler, which uses exhaust heat to warm the engine up faster; one owner had the bulletin work done at 82,000 miles and reports the leak stopped, and a separate bulletin revises the engine-computer logic for a low-coolant-flow code on 2023 hybrids specifically. The other is the battery management system draining the 12-volt battery so the car behaves as if it is dead. There is also a small cluster of hybrid-system failures — sudden shutdowns at 60 mph with a "Hybrid System Failure" warning, one traced to an AC motor power cable that was replaced four times without curing it. Ask about coolant history, white smoke, and any hybrid-system warning.

Push-button shifter rollawaysmoderate

A small but physical 2023 pattern with no bulletin behind it. The eighth-generation Sonata uses push buttons instead of a shift lever, and several owners report the car failing to engage Park: one pressed Park after stopping and the car rolled forward into their garage door, another says it has happened more than once. A separate owner argues the layout itself is the hazard, because the buttons require the brake to be pressed to change direction and mistiming leaves you in the wrong gear — they ran over a portable toilet reversing on a slight incline. Complaint-sourced, so treat it as a habit to build rather than a defect to fix: watch the dash confirm P, and use the parking brake every time.

Sunroof shattering on its ownminor

Two 2023 owners report the sunroof or moonroof shattering with no impact — one on the freeway at low speed with no overpass above, describing the glass as bowing upwards as though it burst outwards, with the cloth headliner catching most of the fragments; another says their insurer told them it happens to Hyundais often. There is no Hyundai bulletin for this in the Sonata file and no recall, so this is an owner-reported pattern, not a confirmed programme. Comprehensive insurance is the practical backstop. Worth knowing before you pay extra for the glass roof.

What you no longer worry aboutminor

Four model years clear of the seventh-generation car, none of the Theta II connecting-rod-bearing material applies to a 2023 — different engine family, different platform. Hyundai's anti-theft campaigns for vehicles without an engine immobilizer list model years 2011 to 2019 on their Sonata bulletins, so the 2023 sits outside that population. The white-paint warranty extension bulletins stop at 2019. And recalls 22V746, 21V524, 21V00M and 22V196 all stop before 2023. That leaves two recalls, the injectors, and normal used-car diligence — the shortest list of any Sonata year we cover.

  1. 01Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup for 23V526 and 25V796 before you view the car. 23V526 carries a park-outside advisory until it is repaired.
  2. 02Ask for the repair orders on both recalls rather than taking a verbal answer.
  3. 03Have any stored engine codes read. Cylinder-misfire codes on the 2.5 point at Hyundai's injector-filter bulletin.
  4. 04Ask directly whether the fuel injectors have been replaced and when — repeat failures are documented on this year.
  5. 05Smell for fuel around the rear of the car and look underneath for staining near the tank.
  6. 06On an N Line, drive it from cold in stop-and-go traffic and feel for shudder; ask whether the transmission software update was applied.
  7. 07On a hybrid, check the coolant reservoir and ask whether the car has ever blown white smoke or had the exhaust heat-recovery assembly repaired.
  8. 08On a hybrid, ask whether the 12-volt battery management software update was applied.
  9. 09Practise the push-button shifter: stop, press P, and confirm the dash shows P before you take your foot off the brake. Use the parking brake on any slope.
