Hybrid only: engine-replacement recall 20V746, plus sudden hybrid shutdownsmajor
- Hybrid and plug-in hybrid (gen 7)
The 2016 Sonata Hybrid is the one version that got an actual safety recall for the bearing problem. Recall 20V746 covers the 2016 Sonata Hybrid: dealers inspect the engine, replace it free if bearing damage is found, and install the knock-sensor software. Separately, the hybrid's own complaint file is dominated by a different scare — a "Check Hybrid System, turn off engine" warning followed by total loss of power, sometimes at 65 mph, often with the car shaking. Several owners report it happening repeatedly with no diagnosis. If you are looking at a 2016 hybrid, 20V746 showing complete by VIN is the first thing to check, and a documented hybrid-system shutdown history is a walk-away.
