Reliability report · 2018 Hyundai Sonata · Updated July 2026

Half the noise of 2017, but the same engine — the oil-consumption question is still the whole inspection.

The volume falls hard in 2018 — 366 complaints on the gas car and nine on the hybrid, against 872 across all versions in 2017 — but the content does not change. Owners describe burning oil at a rate that empties the sump between changes, then a knock, then an engine that will not run. Two file after a fire. Several cite the diagnostic code P1326 and Hyundai Service Campaign 966 by name.

Two things make the 2018 more manageable than the years before it. It sits inside the same coverage: the knock-sensor campaign and the staged engine-warranty extension that reached a Limited Lifetime Warranty valid for later owners. And it carries only one open safety recall, for the trunk latch. The buying task is narrow and specific: prove the oil consumption is under control and prove which warranty tier this VIN has.

Squawking

What that means: 375 federal complaints, down sharply from 872 the year before, and only one recall. But the complaint file has the same subject as 2016 and 2017: the Theta II engine burning oil, then knocking, then failing. The 2018 is inside the knock-sensor campaign and inside the rod-bearing warranty extension, so this is a car to inspect carefully rather than avoid — but the inspection is not optional.

Oil consumption on the Theta II engine — and where it leads

major
  • 2.4L GDI Theta II (gen 7)
  • 2.0L Turbo GDI Theta II (gen 7)

This is what the 2018 file is about. Owners report checking the oil weekly, finding it black within 500 to 1,000 miles, and topping up between services; several find the sump nearly empty two weeks after a change. That matters because it is the front end of a known chain. Theta II is Hyundai's four-cylinder engine family, and in the 2.4-litre GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) and 2.0-litre turbo versions the connecting-rod bearings — the metal shells the piston rods spin on — wear early when oil runs low or dirty, producing a deep knock and eventually a seized engine. The independent mechanic in our sources makes the causal link explicitly: check that it is not burning oil, because that will accelerate rod bearing failure. Hyundai's protection is Service Campaign 966, which installs KSDS — the Knock Sensor Detection System, software that listens for early bearing wear and puts the engine into a protection mode — and a warranty extension on the engine long block for rod-bearing damage, raised in stages to 10 years/120,000 miles, then 15 years/150,000 miles, then a Limited Lifetime Warranty valid for original and subsequent owners. Confirm the tier for the VIN with Hyundai. For the gas car this is a campaign and a warranty, not a safety recall.

This is a 2.4L GDI Theta II (gen 7) and 2.0L Turbo GDI Theta II (gen 7) problem. The 1.6L Turbo + 7-speed DCT (gen 7), Hybrid and plug-in hybrid (gen 7), 2.5L GDI Theta III (gen 8), 2.5L Turbo + 8-speed wet DCT (gen 8), 1.6L Turbo (gen 8), and Hybrid (gen 8) don’t share it.

Cracked aluminium oil panmoderate

A distinct 2018 cluster that is not the bearing story: the lower aluminium oil pan developing a hairline fracture. One owner describes it as a structural crack, another reports a small drip with a dealer warning that it could split further, and both report Hyundai declining to cover it. There is no Hyundai bulletin for this in the Sonata manufacturer file, so treat it as a complaint-sourced pattern rather than a known programme. Practically: get the car on a lift and look at the pan and its seam before you buy, because a car that is both burning oil and leaking it is a bad combination on an engine whose failure mode is oil starvation.

Trunk latch can trap someone inside (recall 21V619)major

The 2018's only open safety recall. Recall 21V619 covers 2017 to 2018 Sonata and 2016 to 2018 Sonata Hybrid: the trunk latch can be damaged so the trunk cannot be opened from inside, failing the federal internal-trunk-release standard. Dealers replace the latch base free. Owner letters went out in December 2021, so a car that has changed hands since may never have had it done — check by VIN.

Cold-start hesitation after the emissions campaign — expected behaviourmoderate

  • 2.4L GDI Theta II (gen 7)

2018 owners report the same thing 2016 and 2017 owners do: the car became hesitant and rough at low revs right after a dealer visit for a software update, and nobody can fix it. One names the bulletin number in their complaint. Hyundai's own documents explain it. Service Campaign 9C2 reflashes the engine computer on Theta II cars after the California Air Resources Board found them exceeding emissions standards, and the follow-up bulletin states that afterwards vehicles "may exhibit a brief hesitation or rough shifting condition during cold start operation," expected only within roughly the first one to three minutes after start while the catalytic converter warms up. Brief cold hesitation that clears is the software. Hesitation once warm is not, and deserves a diagnosis.

Hybrid: a small file, but it is the same enginemajor

  • Hybrid and plug-in hybrid (gen 7)

Only nine federal complaints exist for the 2018 Sonata Hybrid, and two of them name Hyundai Service Campaign 966 directly — one owner had it performed twice in a fortnight and still stalled in an intersection, another was told the engine needed replacing with campaign 966 unrepaired on the VIN. A third logs the whole chain in one filing: code P1326 knock sensor, a cylinder-two misfire, lost communication with the hybrid powertrain control module, and two trips into limp-home mode at around 69,000 miles. One owner was quoted $1,908 for an electric water pump after losing all power on a freeway. Note that unlike 2016 and 2017, the 2018 hybrid has no rod-bearing recall — it relies on the campaign and the warranty extension like the gas car.

Cold no-crank from a loose starter terminalminor

  • 2.4L GDI Theta II (gen 7)
  • 2.0L Turbo GDI Theta II (gen 7)

A cheap, specific, documented fault worth knowing before you pay a shop to guess. Hyundai's bulletin states that on certain 2018 Sonatas with the 2.4-litre or 2.0-litre turbo engine, the starter's M-terminal nut can loosen, producing a no-crank condition in cold weather while the car starts normally at room temperature. If the seller says "it's just slow on cold mornings," this is the first thing to check.

2.0T with the eight-speed: don't let a shop replace the transmissionminor

  • 2.0L Turbo GDI Theta II (gen 7)

The 2018 2.0-litre turbo pairs with an eight-speed automatic, and Hyundai issued two useful bulletins for it. One provides engine- and transmission-software updates for cylinder-imbalance diagnostic codes. The other is blunter and could save an owner thousands: it instructs dealers not to replace the transmission for a listed set of solenoid codes, and to replace the related part instead. If a shop quotes you a transmission on the strength of a solenoid code, get a second opinion and cite the bulletin.

Theft-era immobilizer campaigns and the paint extensionminor

Neither is a safety recall, and both are worth asking about. Hyundai's bulletins describe Campaigns 993, P32 and 9A5 — anti-theft software with window decals, a steering-wheel lock, and a reinforced ignition-cylinder protector — offered in response to thefts of 2011 to 2022 Hyundai vehicles not fitted with an engine immobilizer, targeted through social media; every Sonata bulletin carrying them lists model years 2011 to 2019, so the 2018 is included. A separate class settlement covers the same allegation. And Hyundai extended the paint warranty for factory white paint that peels or bubbles on the metal panels, covering 2015 to 2019 Sonatas — the published summary does not state the term, so verify it in the bulletin PDF.
