2020 Explorer

Driveline and park-system rollaway — the recall cluster to verify

The 2020's most serious pattern is a set of driveline defects that can let the truck move when it shouldn't. A driveshaft can fracture along its weld seam on AWD ten-speed cars (recall 20V-693); a rear-axle horizontal mounting bolt can break and disconnect the driveshaft (23V-675, with software fixes 23V-069 and 23V-199); and an unintended powertrain-control-module reset can damage the park system so the truck won't actually hold 'Park.' Owners describe exactly that: 'the transmission shifts into park while driving,' and a 'loud dragging sound underneath' followed by loss of drive. Ford's bulletins (11009831/11006038) document the rear-axle-bolt fracture directly. All are free recall repairs — but on a used car they are only worth anything if they were done. Verify every one of these by VIN.

Ten-speed automatic — jerking, hesitation, and out-of-warranty failures

The new ten-speed automatic is the gen-6 Explorer's frequent pain point. An independent mechanic describes valve-body and torque-converter glitches roughly between 40,000 and 80,000 miles, addressed by Ford software updates and recalls. The federal file backs it up: hard 7-to-6 downshift jerks, hesitation, and outright failures — one owner's transmission 'failed at 72,000 miles under normal driving,' another at 83,000 — past the powertrain warranty and on the owner's dime. On a test drive, feel for a jerk on deceleration or a shudder; get a diagnostic scan before buying, and price transmission risk into a high-mileage example.

2.3L EcoBoost — turbo and coolant, plus a launch-year inspection program

On the base 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder, an independent mechanic reports turbocharger failures or coolant leaks on higher-mileage examples 'often costing $1,500 to $3,000 to repair.' Ford also ran a launch-year delivery-hold Customer Support Program (19B24) inspecting the 2.3L balance-shaft and oil-pump assembly on 2020 cars. And recall 19V-687 covers a wiring harness that can rub the A/C pulley and short against battery power — a fire risk on 2.3L/3.3L cars. Watch for coolant loss and confirm 19V-687 was completed.

2020 Highlander

HVAC fresh/recirculate door servo — the defroster failure

The one gen-four problem the mechanic source calls 'an actual problem': a small servo motor that switches the climate system between fresh and recirculated air can separate and stop working, so the defroster won't clear the glass and you may hear noises behind the dash. The fix is a replacement servo and door; most are covered under warranty, and Toyota is described as good about goodwill coverage if you're just outside it. It can't be fixed preventively — you address it if it appears. On a test drive, run the defroster and toggle fresh/recirc to confirm both work.

Early-2020-build transmission flare-up (software)

Very-early-build 2020s (bought late 2019 / very start of 2020) can show an RPM flare on the 1-to-2 upshift — the revs jump as if slipping. It is a software calibration issue, not hardware, and a dealer software update resolves it; later 2020 builds and all 2021s are unaffected. The eight-speed itself is the sorted unit here (no 2017-style failures), though it is a busy, downshift-happy transmission by design — test-drive it so its shift behavior isn't a surprise.

A/C stops cooling — condenser fitting (early cars)

A handful of mostly-2020 cars lost all A/C cooling because a fitting on the condenser wasn't fully clipped during assembly. It's a production item, generally covered under warranty; if the A/C quits entirely, the condenser lines are the first place to look. Low-frequency, but worth a cold-air check on the test drive.

Redesign rules

  1. An Explorer only with the rollaway cluster documented.

    20V-693, 23V-069, 23V-199, and 23V-675 all address ways this truck can fail to hold or transmit drive — every one free, every one non-negotiable. Add the two fuel-system fire recalls (19V-859, 20V-730) to the same VIN pull.

  2. The Explorer's ten-speed is the ownership question.

    Jerking and hesitation lead the complaints; a dealer reflash runs under $200, but out-of-warranty repair goes several thousand, directional. A smooth, documented transmission is the only kind to buy.

  3. The Highlander's checks are small and specific.

    The HVAC fresh/recirculate servo is the defroster failure to test on max defrost, early builds carry a transmission software flare-up, and early cars can lose A/C at a condenser fitting. None is a drivetrain risk.

  4. Close the Highlander's four recalls and you're done.

    Seat-trim covers (20V-633), the V6 fuel-cut ECU error (20V-162), the OCS sensor short (23V-865), and the bumper-cover item (23V-720) are all free fixes. A 2020 with those closed is the rare redesign you can buy like a third-year car.
