The failure, explained
The 10R80 requires Mercon ULV fluid exclusively — universal ATF chemically degrades the clutch packs. From there, mechanics describe one sequence:
1 · Neglect
Skipped fluid services, or the wrong fluid entirely.
2 · Deposits
Valve body gums up. Shifts turn harsh, then unpredictable.
3 · Wear
On 2021+ builds, the CDF clutch drum wears through. Lurching, banging into gear.
4 · Failure
Slipping, then no drive. Fluid changes no longer help. Mechanics see it at 80k on neglected trucks — and 200k+ on serviced ones.

Which years, which flavor
The affected years run 2017–2023. Every one of them has a chapter — but not the same one.
First year. Shift-linkage roll pin recalls (17V-671, 18V-213) — rollaway risk, free fixes. Out-of-warranty shift-quality repairs run $3,000+.
Full report →The loudest year. The maintenance story in full: Mercon ULV or bust, pink fluid or walk. Rebuilds $3,000–$6,000.
Full report →No transmission recall exists — a problem truck is an out-of-warranty repair, $3,000–$5,500. The test drive is everything.
Full report →Lower volume, one sneaky recall: shift-cable clip (20V-197) can make the dash gear reading lie — rollaway risk if open.
Full report →The CDF clutch drum era begins. False-neutral software recall is free; the drum itself is never covered.
Full report →Build date matters: Ford revised the drum in production around August 2022. Later builds, better odds. Park-gear recall applies.
Full report →Park may not engage despite the indicator — loose internal bolt, recall 23V-070, free inspection. Shift-quality complaints continue generation-wide.
Full report →What’s covered — and what never was

What to do about it
Different move depending on which side of the sale you’re on.
Shopping for one
- Ask for Mercon ULV service records. No records? Negotiate a drain-and-fill and look at the fluid: pink and clean means serviced, dark brown and burnt means walk.
- Test drive at every speed. Harsh 2–3 shifts, lurching from a stop, any hesitation = someone else's problem truck.
- 2021 or newer: check the build date. Post–August 2022 builds got the revised drum. The date is on the driver's door jamb.
- Run the VIN. Every campaign above is free at a dealer — get the printout, not the seller's word.
Already own one
- Book a drain-and-fill now if you can't name the date of the last one. $350 against $6,000.
- Symptoms already? Fluid first, then a dealer adaptive relearn — harshness right after service is often the computer re-learning, not damage.
- Verify every recall on your VIN. The Park campaigns are rollaway risks, not shift-feel quirks.
- Get symptoms on a dated work order even if the dealer says "normal operation." Paper matters later.
Pink and clean means serviced. Dark brown and burnt means the damage is already underway.
