Chevrolet Special coverage N182202780

NHTSA summary, verbatim

Special Coverage Adjustment - In some circumstances, some 2014-2018 model year Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra, and GMC Yukon vehicles may have a condition where customers may experience increased brake pedal effort, hard brake pedal, and/or potentially increased stopping distance. The condition is more prevalent at low speed when softly applying the brakes. The engine mounted mechanical vacuum pump output may decrease over time decreasing the amount of vacuum/power brake assist. Failure to follow recommended oil change intervals could contribute to this condition. The Driver?s Information Center, (DIC) ?Service brake assist? alert will activate 2-5 minutes after the vacuum level drops, and a Diagnostic Trouble Code, (DTC) will also be set. Even where this condition occurs, the hydraulic brake system remains functional but may require additional pedal force. Dealers are to replace the vacuum pump and vacuum pump belt. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

Coverage window

This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.

Where this shows up in our reports

  • 2016 Chevrolet Suburban: Vacuum-pump brake-assist loss — GM covers it with recall 19V645, a free EBCM reprogram spanning 2015–2018 Suburbans, and with a separate Special Coverage Adjustment (N182202780) for 2014–2018 trucks.
  • 2017 Chevrolet Suburban: Vacuum-pump brake-assist loss — Recall 19V645 covers 2015–2018 Suburbans with a free reprogram of the EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module, the computer running the anti-lock and stability systems), and Special Coverage Adjustment N182202780 is the customer-facing companion.
  • 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe: Vacuum-pump brake-assist loss — GM addressed it with recalls 19V645 and 20V603 (an EBCM — Electronic Brake Control Module — reprogram, free) and a Special Coverage Adjustment (N182202780) for 2014–2017.
  • 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe: Vacuum-pump brake-assist loss — GM's recall 19V645 reprograms the EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module) free, and a Special Coverage Adjustment (N182202780) covers 2014–2017.
  • 2016 GMC Yukon: Brake pedal goes hard as the vacuum pump weakens
  • 2017 GMC Yukon: Brake pedal goes hard as the vacuum pump weakens
  • 2018 GMC Yukon: Two brake campaigns, and this year gets an extra one
  • 2021 Chevrolet Colorado: 2.5L brake vacuum pump seizes — hard pedal, broken camshaft, sometimes a new engine — There is no NHTSA recall and no GM Colorado programme covering it — GM's 19V645 vacuum-pump recall and Special Coverage N182202780 apply to full-size 5.3- and 6.2-litre V8 trucks and name a different pump on a different engine.
