Reliability report · 2023 Toyota Tacoma · Updated July 2026

The final third-gen Tacoma — the smallest complaint file of the run, but a driver-airbag recall that was re-issued means you verify the fix was actually done right.

The 2023 is the send-off year for the third-generation Tacoma and carries the smallest complaint file of the run. But it has the most nuanced recall picture: the driver-airbag spiral-cable recall (23V480) was followed by a second campaign (25V040) covering trucks that may have been incorrectly repaired the first time — so a '23V480 completed' record isn't the end of the story; verify 25V040 too. It also shares the 2022–2023 rear-axle-separation and child-seat-anchor recalls.

Mechanically, the V6 and six-speed are the known-durable pairing with no catastrophic pattern. The one cost item that recurs late is a steering-rack seal leak that can surface just out of the 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and isn't covered by the powertrain warranty. Confirm all four recalls — especially the airbag re-do — and a 2023 is a strong, long-life truck.

Canary status

Chirping

What that means: 47 federal complaints — the smallest file of the generation — and four recalls. The one that needs the closest look is the driver-airbag spiral-cable recall (23V480), because Toyota issued a second recall (25V040) for trucks that may have been repaired incorrectly the first time. It joins the rear-axle-separation and child-seat-anchor recalls. No expensive mechanical pattern; the story here is careful recall verification.

Driver-airbag spiral cable — recall 23V480, re-issued as 25V040

major

The recall that needs the closest attention. An electrical connection inside the steering column's spiral cable (clock spring) may be insufficiently welded and separate, deactivating the driver's airbag so it won't deploy in a crash. The original recall is 23V480 (Toyota code 23TA08). Toyota then issued a second recall, 25V040 (Toyota code 25TA02), for vehicles that may have been incorrectly repaired under 23V480 — so a truck showing 23V480 'completed' could still need the follow-up fix. Both remedies are free (inspect and replace the spiral cable). Verify BOTH campaigns by VIN.

Rear axle-shaft separation — recall 24V152major

Carryover from 2022 and a genuine safety item: the rear axle-shaft sub-assembly can separate from the axle housing — debris can cause improperly secured fasteners — risking a loss of stability and brake performance. It covers 2022–2023 Tacomas (Toyota codes 24TB05/24TA05); the remedy is a free inspection, re-torque of the axle nuts, and repair or replacement as needed. Verify by VIN.

Child-seat anchor welds — recall 22V520moderate

A safety-standard recall for family buyers: one or more of the welds in the upper child-seat (top-tether) anchors may be insufficient, which could let a child seat move in a sudden stop or crash. It covers 2022–2023 Tacomas (Toyota codes 22TB09/22TA09); the remedy is a free inspection and reweld as needed. Confirm it's done if you'll use the top-tether anchor.

Steering-rack seal leak — a late-year out-of-warranty costmoderate

The one recurring cost item in the small 2023 file. Owners report the steering-rack seals failing and power-steering fluid weeping into the tie-rod boots — one at roughly 52,000 miles, just outside the 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and not covered by the powertrain warranty, so the repair fell entirely on the owner. Dealers describe it as a known issue. Low frequency, but check the power-steering fluid level and look for moisture on the tie-rod boots when buying.

Coolant-bypass pipe, six-speed feel, and paintminor

The familiar housekeeping. The V6's plastic coolant-bypass pipe behind the engine can crack — check the passenger side and top of the transmission for a coolant trail; it's covered under powertrain warranty while in term. The six-speed automatic's gear-hunting is a software-and-fluid characteristic rather than a failure (keep the fluid fresh at 60k/6-year intervals). And 040 Super White trucks peel at the door frames, inner fenders, and A-pillars — covered by Customer Support Program 23TE08 (a quiet, extended coverage program) for 2016–2022 Tacomas (verify a late-2022-built or early 2023 truck's eligibility against the program's exact scope).
