The launch year, and the loudest. 322 complaints, the largest file in the range, and the powertrain cluster is the reason: owners describe a clunk shifting from Park to Drive, hesitation and delay, lurching, and a shudder around 40–50 mph. Toyota's master-tech read is that the truck 'doesn't shift smooth, doesn't shift on time' — and that it's a software and fluid problem, not a broken gearbox. That matters: it's cheap to address, not a rebuild. The other 2016 items are real but checkable: the plastic coolant bypass pipe at the back of the engine is notorious for cracking (look for a coolant trail on top of the transmission, passenger side), and there's a crank-position-sensor recall (17V356) on V6 trucks that can stall the engine, plus a rear-differential oil-leak recall (17V285). Both are free. Rear brakes on this year also rattle when you press the pedal.
Same truck, same two problems. 237 complaints and the same profile as 2016: the six-speed's shift quality and the cracking plastic coolant bypass pipe, which the Car Care Nut calls worst on these first two years. The recall homework grows slightly — the V6 crank sensor (17V356) and rear-diff leak (17V285) carry over, and a brake-booster vacuum-pump recall (18V211) is added, a machining defect that can cause a sudden loss of brake assist. All free; verify by VIN. Toyota also ran a paint program for clear-coat flaking on Blazing Blue trucks (program 20TE02), and a broader peeling-paint program (23TE08) covers Super White door frames and A-pillars on 2016–2022 trucks. If you're buying either early year, the frame inspection matters most: these were built before Toyota began spraying wax inside the frame rails.
✓ Years to hunt for
The value pick — sprayed frames, quieter file. 197 complaints, and the first year Toyota sprayed the inside of the frame rails with a wax coating that doesn't evaporate — meaningfully better rust behavior than 2016–2017 in salt states (still coat the outside; the frame rots from the inside out). The six-speed's shift character is still present but the worst of the early-truck complaints have receded. Recall homework is short and free: the low-pressure fuel pump (20V012, expanded by 20V682) which can fail and stall the engine, and a brake master-cylinder recall (18V888) specific to 2018–2019 Tacomas. A non-recall service campaign (K0B) also updates the front radar sensor, which can let water in and cause the pre-collision system to brake on its own.
The clean one — no recalls at all. 76 complaints and, unusually, zero federal safety recalls — we verified that directly with NHTSA rather than assuming it. The six-speed's software fixes are long since baked in, the frame is sprayed, and the file that remains is driveability and inspection items rather than failures. If you want the least homework of any Tacoma in the range, this is it. Two things still worth a look on any high-mileage third-gen: the front-differential and transfer-case actuators are known to seize (the transfer-case one is the expensive side, because the case has to come apart), and the rear differential can whine around 50 mph on Double Cabs — a characteristic, not a failure.
Quietest file, small recall list. 55 complaints, the second-smallest here. The truck is fully sorted by now; what's left is recall homework, all free: a rear-axle recall (24V152) where the axle shafts can separate from the housing, and a child-seat-anchor recall (22V520). A service campaign (22TC01) also reprograms the telematics module over the air. The peeling-paint program (23TE08) still reaches 2022 Super White trucks — check door frames and A-pillars. Otherwise this is the mature, low-drama version of a truck that never had an expensive failure pattern to begin with.
