The short list
Where the money goes wrong — and where it doesn’t.
✕ Years to avoid
The launch year that shipped its bugs. 410 federal complaints, 11 recalls, an open investigation, and the two headline patterns: sticky steering where the recall fix sometimes didn't hold, and a 48-volt mild-hybrid battery fault with packs on national backorder. Buyable — but only with the full recall printout and a passed steering test.
✓ Years to hunt for
The settled year, so far. Five complaints, a verified zero recalls, and factory software that includes every launch-era fix. It's the current model year, so the file is young — the early watch item is two instrument-cluster failure reports.
The honest middle. 37 complaints and 2 recalls — a tenfold improvement on the launch year. The catch: steering complaints continue on a year the steering recall doesn't cover, and early-build plug-ins still had shutdown storms.
Same year. Different engine.
One badge, several engines — the year’s verdict assumes the riskiest one. Yours might be the calm one.
Which engine is in the one you found?
One platform, two very different powertrains — and two different problem files. The volume engine. Its problems are electrical, not mechanical. The straight-six itself draws praise everywhere; its 48-volt mild-hybrid assist system is where the file lives. A documented cell-imbalance fault (trouble code P0DAB) can throw the car into limp mode — Mazda's own service alert says reflash first, replace the battery only as required, and packs were on national backorder. Add the i-stop no-restart recall (24V816) and the fuel-gauge recall (25V568), both software. A dead battery also means no neutral: the hydraulic park lock needs the engine running, so the car gets moved on wheel dollies.
The plug-in carries the platform's worst pattern. Four-cylinder plug-in hybrid with the electric motor upstream of the 8-speed — so it shifts even in EV mode, and reviewers across our sources found it less refined than the I6. The federal file is harsher: 'electrical leakage' shutdown storms that bricked nearly-new cars across 2024 and 2025, four software recalls (23V719, 24V814, 24V815, 24V817), months-long parts backorders, and a quiet 8-year water-heater warranty extension (SSP D9). A PHEV with clean campaign history and no malfunction sagas is fine; verify, don't assume.
Both powertrains share the clutch-pack 8-speed (no torque converter) — the low-speed lug and firm 1st-to-2nd shift are design character on every CX-90, not a fault to chase.

Each verdict links to the full report: known issues with real repair costs, open recalls, and the print-and-go inspection checklist.
A launch year that shipped its bugs — eleven recalls fixed most of them free, but the steering and the 48-volt battery still need receipts.
410 complaints · 11 recalls
Full report →The file shrinks tenfold, but the same storms echo — and the steering complaints now have no recall behind them.
37 complaints · 2 recalls
Full report →The cleanest file of the three — a verified zero recalls — but it's the current model year, and the jury is still out.
5 complaints · 0 recalls
Full report →Innovation, yes. Terrible idea.
