Reliability report · 2026 Mazda CX-90 · Updated August 2026

The cleanest file of the three — a verified zero recalls — but it's the current model year, and the jury is still out.

By its third year the CX-90's federal record looks like what Mazda presumably intended all along: no recalls (a verified zero — NHTSA's own vehicle page reads zero, every prior campaign's scope ends at 2025, and Mazda's bulletin index shows no safety campaign touching 2026), and a complaint file you can count on one hand. The factory software now ships with the launch era's eleven campaigns baked in. The early-build caveat still applies at the edges: 2026s built through November 18, 2025 fall inside CSP14, the rear-brake-squeal Customer Service Program — a warranty extension with reimbursement — so even this year's brakes come with paperwork worth checking.

The watch item is new: two of the five complaints describe instrument-cluster failures — a cluster that reboots mid-drive (gauges to zero, wipers self-triggering, for one to three seconds), and a 500-mile car with cluster loss, brake-light and turn-signal failures, and a replacement on backorder. One complainant says a cluster replacement made it worse and that other owners report the same. Two complaints is a whisper, not a pattern — but on this platform, whispers have twice grown into campaigns, so we're flagging it early. The rest of the file is one-offs: a steering pull chased through three dealer visits, a front-passenger airbag-sensing complaint, and cabin fume reports a dealer couldn't reproduce.

Canary status

Chirping

What that means: Five federal complaints and a verified zero recalls as of August 2026 — the platform's third year is its quietest by far. Chirping rather than Calm for one honest reason: this is the current model year, most 2026s have four-digit odometers, and the file is too young to prove the launch-era problems are gone rather than merely not-yet-reported. The one new shape worth watching: two of the five complaints describe instrument-cluster failures.

Instrument-cluster reboots and blackouts — the early watch item

moderate

Two of this year's five complaints, same organ: the digital instrument cluster. One describes reboots while braking — every warning light flashes, gauges drop to zero, the wipers fire, then it recovers in one to three seconds; a cluster replacement reportedly made it worse, and the owner says multiple other vehicles are affected. The other is a 500-mile car with intermittent full cluster loss plus brake-light, turn-signal, and liftgate faults — the replacement cluster was on backorder with no repair date. No campaign exists and two reports prove nothing; but a platform that produced eleven software recalls in year one has earned early flags. On a test drive, watch the cluster through a few hard stops; on a purchase, ask whether the cluster has ever been replaced and check for open electrical work orders.

Steering and the launch-era inheritance — what to still verifymoderate

One 2026 complaint echoes the platform's oldest cluster: a near-new car pulling left, lane-keep fighting the driver, three dealer visits, a 0.1-degree alignment, no fix, case escalated to Mazda. One report — but the 2024 sticky-steering story (recall 24V022, remedy failures, an open investigation on earlier years) makes any 2026 steering oddity worth zero benefit of the doubt. The same full-lock parking-lot test applies: turn to the stops both ways, exit with light hands, and accept nothing but a smooth self-centering wheel. The launch-era powertrain campaigns don't reach 2026 builds, so there's no recall homework here — the factory software is current by construction — but the transmission's manual-like low-speed character (a designed-in trait of the clutch-pack 8-speed, per the mechanic sources) is unchanged, so calibrate your expectations on the drive.

Rear brakes: early 2026 builds are inside the coverage programminor

CSP14 — the rear-brake-squeal Customer Service Program, a warranty extension with reimbursement for past repairs — covers 2024–2026 CX-90s produced through November 18, 2025. That includes early 2026-model-year builds. If the car you're looking at squeals from the rear, check the build date on the door jamb, confirm CSP14 eligibility on the VIN, and let Mazda's program pay for it. Later builds should have the revised parts from the factory; squeal on one of those is a normal warranty conversation.

Three years in, the software chaos has quieted to five complaints — but two of the five are the same new symptom, and that's how the 2024's clusters started too.

  1. 01Verify the zero yourself at purchase time: run the VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup — this report's zero was verified 2026-08-02 and new campaigns on a current model year are always possible.
  2. 02Watch the instrument cluster through several firm stops on the test drive; ask directly whether the cluster has ever been replaced or reflashed.
  3. 03Do the full-lock steering test (both directions, light hands on exit) — the platform's history says any binding or pull gets zero benefit of the doubt.
  4. 04Check the build date: on or before November 18, 2025 means CSP14 rear-brake coverage applies — a squeal is Mazda's bill, not yours.
  5. 05On the I6, the low-speed lug and firm 1st-to-2nd shift are design character, not wear — judge them on the drive.
  6. 06This is a current-year vehicle: most issues will be straightforward factory-warranty claims. The homework is lighter here than on the 2024 — it's mostly making sure you're not buying someone else's unresolved saga.
