The quietest third-generation year on paper, and the only one with no knock-sensor campaign behind its four-cylinder.

This is the specific reason a 2020 needs a harder look than its complaint count suggests. Kia's Knock Sensor Detection System — free software that "detects vibrations indicating the onset of excessive connecting rod bearing wear" and stores diagnostic trouble code P1326 when it triggers — was rolled out to Sorentos through two Product Improvement Campaigns. A Product Improvement Campaign is a free fix Kia offers outside the safety-recall system. PI1802 covers 2015 model-year cars with the 2.4 and "all 2016-2018 MY Sorento vehicles equipped with 2.4L Gasoline Direct Injection ('GDI') and 2.0L Turbocharged GDI ('T-GDI') engines". PI1805 covers "some 2019 MY Sorento vehicles equipped with 2.4L Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines". Kia's Sorento bulletin file contains no equivalent campaign for a 2020. So on this car the bearings can wear without the early-warning code the earlier cars get, and the only symptom you are likely to see is the oil going down. There is also no engine warranty extension: Kia's short-block extension, WTY008, covers 2012 to 2014 model years.

If the car has the 3.3-litre V6, one real piece of free coverage reaches it. Kia's Warranty Extension Program WTY034 covers the high-pressure fuel pump on 2019 and 2020 Sorentos with 3.3-litre V6 engines built from 24 January 2018, extending coverage "from 5 years / 60,000 miles to 15 years / 180,000 miles, whichever comes first, starting from the date the vehicle was first put into service." A high-pressure fuel pump feeds the direct-injection system, and its failure shows up as hard starting, hesitation, or a stall under load. This is the extension to quote if the car develops a fuel-delivery fault; it applies regardless of how many owners the car has had.

A small but consistent cluster in the 2020 file is a misfire on one cylinder. "Check engine light came on indicating a problem with cylinder 4 (P0304). Replaced all spark plugs and coil pack to no avail. Car still strugg[les]", and a second owner reports the same code with the car slowing while driving. An independent repair channel covering this generation gives the practical diagnosis order: read the misfire code, inspect coils and spark plugs, and swap a coil to another cylinder to see whether the misfire follows it. What makes a misfire worth fixing quickly rather than living with is that unburnt fuel reaching the exhaust can overheat the catalytic converter — the exhaust device that cleans the gases — and a converter that breaks up internally can send debris where you do not want it. Do not drive a Sorento with a rough idle and hope.

Several 2020 owners describe an oil warning light that turns out to be the switch rather than the oil. "Oil pressure light would come on and off, dealer said was probably the sensor got it replaced. Came back on the night I picked it back up", and more pointedly: "My Oil Pressure Switch is diagnosed as faulty by independent service center as well as Kia. Kia is denying coverage." Kia does run a warranty extension for exactly this part — WTY026, which covers "an Oil Pressure Switch leak" and raises coverage from 10 years and 100,000 miles to 15 years and 150,000 miles — but the model-year table in Kia's own bulletin runs 2014 to 2018. That is the likely reason for the denials on a 2020. Ask a dealer to check eligibility by VIN, and if the answer is no, treat it as a paid repair rather than a covered one.

One recall applies to the 2020 Sorento. Recall 22V703 covers 2016 to 2022 Sorentos fitted with a Kia tow-hitch harness, whether original equipment or bought as an accessory through a Kia dealership. Debris and moisture on the harness module's printed circuit board "may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire" while parked or driving. Kia advises owners to park outside and away from structures until the repair is complete, and dealers inspect and replace the fuse and/or the harness module free of charge. Kia's code is SC249. If the car has no Kia hitch harness, this does not apply; the dealer can confirm from the VIN in a minute.

SC340 is Kia's voluntary emissions service campaign upgrading the engine control module software on 2016 to 2020 Sorentos with the 2.4-litre Theta II engine, because certain of these engines "may have engine calibrations that were not optimized for emissions standards under certain specific conditions." It is free, it is not a safety recall, and 2020 is the last Sorento year in its scope. Kia's anti-theft campaigns also reach this car: CS2304 upgrades the body-control software on 2016 to 2020 Sorentos so the ignition is restricted if the locked car is broken into without a key, CS2312 fits a reinforced ignition-cylinder protector with decals, and CS2310 updates the Kia Genuine Remote Start module so it keeps working afterwards. Kia's owner letter calls the software a fix that "addresses the social media theft method" and says it has been available free at authorised dealers since 2023.

A small number of 2020 filings describe fire or smoke with no diagnosis attached: "I was driving 2 minutes away from my house and all of the sudden every warning light on the dashboard came on, billowing smoke started comin[g]", and another that begins with a strong petrol odour and an unknown fuel-system component. These are individual complaints, not a recall, and no campaign in Kia's file addresses them. They are noted here for one practical reason: the single open recall on this year, 22V703, is itself a fire-risk campaign with a park-outside advisory, and there is no good argument for leaving it open on a car whose owners are already reporting engine-bay fires.
