1,241 federal complaints and eight recalls. Which engine it has decides whether this is a bargain or a walk-away.

If the car has the 3.3-litre V6, Kia's own bulletin gives you a free engine under specific conditions. Warranty Extension Program WTY035 covers 2016 and 2017 Sorentos with the 3.3-litre GDI Lambda II engine, built between October 2014 and April 2017. Kia's words: dealers are to "diagnose a coolant leak from the cylinder head gasket area and, if necessary, replace the engine sub-assembly", and "the warranty coverage for related repairs will be extended from 5 years / 60,000 miles to 15 years / 180,000 miles, whichever comes first, starting from the date the vehicle was first put into service." The symptoms Kia lists are a coolant leak, a coolant smell, or the temperature gauge sitting near the H mark. If a 2016 V6 Sorento smells sweet after a drive, that is not a reason to walk — it is a reason to book a Kia dealer appointment before you negotiate. The V6 is not trouble-free otherwise: owners also report seizures, including "my 3.3 V6 engine on my 2016 Kia Sorento seized up with no warning. There is no visible oil on the dip stick."

Kia is recalling 2016 Sedona and Sorento vehicles that "may have been manufactured with faulty automatic transmission shift lever assembly components, preventing the shift lever from locking, which can allow the vehicle to rollaway." Dealers inspect and replace the shift-lever components free of charge; Kia's code is SC246. Owners had been describing it for years before the campaign: "I have a 2016 kia sorento. I was having a problem with the shifter it would not go into park and had to use the shift override button." This is a park-on-the-flat-and-use-the-handbrake problem until it is fixed. Check the VIN and confirm the repair shows complete, not merely mailed.

Kia quietly extended two warranties that cover this car for fifteen years. WTY023 raises coverage on the Motor Driven Power Steering unit — the electric motor that provides steering assistance, also called Electronic Power Steering — on 2016 and 2017 Sorentos from 5 years and 60,000 miles to 15 years and 150,000 miles. A community review of this generation describes the symptom without knowing the bulletin exists: the steering wheel "tends to stick when the vehicle is driven in a straight line for a sustained period of time." WTY031 covers the multifunction switch knob on 2016 to 2018 Sorentos built at Kia's Georgia plant between October 2014 and March 2018, which "may exhibit an intermittent headlamp flickering", also raised to 15 years and 150,000 miles. An independent repair channel calls burnt-out headlights one of the most common faults on this generation and walks through the diagnosis — bulb first, then the alternator's voltage regulator causing spikes, then the headlight wiring harness. If the headlights flicker, the switch repair may be free.

This one is easy to miss because it is conditional. Recall 18V907 covers 2012 to 2017 Sorentos "that previously received an engine replacement under recall number 17V-224, warranty, or the Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) Product Improvement Campaign" — a Product Improvement Campaign is Kia's name for a free, non-safety fix it offers outside the recall system. On those cars the high-pressure fuel pipe connecting to the fuel pump outlet "may have been damaged, misaligned or improperly torqued during the engine replacement procedure, possibly causing a fuel leak", and a fuel leak near an ignition source is a fire. Free inspection and replacement, Kia code SC172. Given how many 2016 engines this complaint file shows being replaced, ask directly whether the engine in the car is the original one — and if it is not, this recall applies to that exact vehicle.

Five more campaigns land on this year, most of them tied to narrow build windows. 15V089 covers cars built between October 2014 and January 2015 with an improperly soldered accelerator-pedal component, where "the driver may not be able to accelerate the vehicle" — free pedal assembly, Kia code SC115. 15V446 covers cars built between October and December 2014 whose front passenger seat-belt buckle latch may stop the belt fastening at all — free buckle cover, SC123. 16V770 covers cars built in a three-week window in March 2016 where the driver seatback frame welds are inadequate and the seatback may not restrain the driver in a rear-end crash — free inspection and frame replacement, SC140. 16V480 covers a rear suspension cross-member weld that "may break, affecting the rear suspension alignment" — free inspection, SC137. And 16V862 covers cars with the accessory trailer-hitch wiring harness whose tow module can leave the trailer brake lights permanently lit, failing federal lighting standard FMVSS 108 — free harness, SC142. Each is free; each needs to show as completed against the VIN.

Recall 22V703 covers 2016 to 2022 Sorentos fitted with a Kia tow-hitch harness, whether it came from the factory or was bought as a dealer accessory. Debris and moisture on the harness module's printed circuit board — the green board holding the electronics — "may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire", parked or driving. Kia advises owners to park outside and away from structures until the repair is done. Dealers inspect and replace the fuse and/or the module free of charge, Kia code SC249. Owners of later Sorentos filed complaints about waiting months for the parts, so if this shows as open on the VIN, ask the dealer to confirm parts availability before you commit to a purchase date.

Kia is running a voluntary emissions service campaign, SC340, that upgrades the engine control module software on 2016 to 2020 Sorentos with the 2.4-litre Theta II engine. Kia's stated reason: certain 2016 to 2022 vehicles with these engines "may have engine calibrations that were not optimized for emissions standards under certain specific conditions" and "may cause the vehicle to release air pollutants which exceed Federal and" California limits. It is free and it is not a safety recall. What makes it worth flagging is a small but distinct pattern in the 2016 complaint file: several owners report a fault appearing right after dealer campaign work. "I took my 2016 Kia Sorento to the dealership for an emissions service update as a result of a service bulliten (SC340). After recieving the car back…" and "Took 2016 kia sorento april 22nd to kia services… to have all recalls fixed, few weeks later engine blew." Kia's bulletins document no expected side effect, so a new driveability complaint after this update should be diagnosed, not shrugged off.

Kia's customer-satisfaction campaign CS2304 upgrades the body-control software on 2016 to 2020 Sorentos so the ignition is restricted if the locked car is broken into without the key. A companion campaign, CS2312, fits a reinforced ignition-cylinder protector with window decals; Kia's owner letter describes the software as one "that addresses the social media theft method" and says it has been available free at authorised dealers since 2023. A third, CS2310, updates the Kia Genuine Remote Start module so it still works after the anti-theft software goes on. These are campaigns, not safety recalls, and they are free. Owners in this file describe the consequence of not having them: "My 2016 Kia Sorento was stolen because it wasn't updated." Confirm the software is on the car, and get an insurance quote before you buy rather than after.
