By 2022 the twelfth-generation Corolla has settled: complaint volume drops to 97 across all three body styles, and — verified against NHTSA on our pull date — there are no open safety recalls on the sedan, hybrid, or hatchback for this year. The coolant flow-valve program window closed behind 2021, and the remaining complaints are scattered rather than pointing at any one expensive fault.

What's left is minor: some brake-shudder and rotor complaints, headlight-aim gripes, and the note that the pre-2023 infotainment screen can crack and its software could be buggy. None of it is drivetrain. If you want the redesigned Corolla without launch-year risk, this is the year — and the hybrid, with its eCVT (an electronically variable transaxle, no clutch or torque converter), is the pick for longevity.

Unusually for a modern car, the 2022 Corolla carries no safety recalls on any of its three body styles as of our July 2026 check. The generation's recall stack sits on either side of it: the occupant-sensor airbag recall stops at 2021, and the steering-column recalls begin at 2023. Past the coolant-valve eraminor

The 2020–2021 cars' signature problem — the coolant flow shut-off valve that lit an 'Engine Maintenance Required' message — does not carry into 2022 in the complaint data, and 2022 sits outside Toyota's 24TE04 coverage program because it no longer needs it. If you were nervous about that issue on the earlier redesign years, the 2022 is where it stops being part of the conversation.

Owners and reviewers note the infotainment screen can crack fairly easily, and the system used through 2022 could be buggy — Bluetooth dropping out, sections of the screen not responding — with those units typically fixed under warranty when new. Toyota fitted a new, better infotainment system for 2023, so a 2022 has the older unit. Confirm the screen is uncracked and the touch functions all work consistently before you commit.
