The one open recall on the 2021: a short circuit can develop in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor that arms the front passenger airbag, and if it shorts the airbag may not deploy. Dealers inspect and replace the sensor free. Remedy letters were mailed in phases into early 2026, so some cars may still be waiting on parts — verify current status by VIN.

A share of 2021 filings aren't about failures at all — they're owners reporting an open 23V-865 recall with the replacement sensor on backorder. It's a real inconvenience but not a defect in the car you're buying; it just means the free remedy may not be done yet. Treat an unfinished 23V-865 as a to-do, not a deal-breaker, and confirm parts availability with the dealer.

Beyond the coolant valve and the airbag-sensor recall, 2021 has no expensive common pattern. The 2.0-liter and hybrid drivetrains have no reported failure clusters, and the hybrid's eCVT (its electronically variable transaxle, which has no clutch or torque converter) in particular is trouble-light. As always, keep up the transmission fluid service, exercise the hybrid's brakes if it's a low-mileage commuter (regenerative braking means the friction brakes work little and can surface-rust), and read any stored codes.
