2020 launched the redesigned twelfth-generation Corolla on Toyota's TNGA platform, with a new 2.0-liter engine option and the first Corolla Hybrid. First-year growing pains show: this is the most-complained-about Corolla year in our data, and one fault accounts for most of it — a coolant flow shut-off valve that fails and lights an 'Engine Maintenance Required' warning, often noticed when the A/C is on.

The saving grace is that Toyota created Customer Support Program 24TE04 for exactly this valve on 2020–2021 cars. Owners who don't know about it get quoted around $800; owners who do get it free. Buy a 2020 with the message already resolved under the program, and the rest of the car is the dependable Corolla you expect.

The defining 2020 issue, and the reason this year's complaint count is high. A coolant flow-control valve fails and the car displays 'Engine Maintenance Required' in the dash — often first noticed when the air conditioning is switched on (the fault sets DTC P268111/P268115). Because it isn't a check-engine emissions light, owners and some shops are confused by it. Toyota runs Customer Support Program 24TE04 — a CSP, the industry's quiet extended-coverage program — for the Flow Shut-off Valve Coolant Leak on 2020–2021 Corolla (and 2019–2021 Corolla Hatchback). Out of program, owners report dealer quotes around $800, with a class action referenced in filings. If that message is on, the valve is the first suspect and it may be a free repair under 24TE04.

Fuel-pump recall — 20V-682moderate

Recall 20V-682 (an expansion of the earlier fuel-pump recall) covers a low-pressure fuel pump on the 2020 Corolla that can fail and stall the engine. The free remedy is an improved pump assembly. Because a stall in traffic is a real hazard, verify by VIN that this pump work is closed before buying.

Occupant-classification sensor recall — 23V-865moderate

Recall 23V-865 covers a short circuit that can develop in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor — the sensor that decides whether the front passenger airbag should arm — on 2020–2021 Corollas. If it shorts, the passenger airbag may not deploy. Dealers inspect and replace the sensor free. Owner letters were phased into early 2026, so some cars are still awaiting the remedy; complaint filings mention the wait. Confirm status by VIN.
