Reliability report · 2021 Kia Sorento · Updated July 2026
A completely new Sorento with five open recalls, including one that can take away drive power and one that can start a fire.
The 2021 Sorento shares nothing meaningful with the 2020. New body, new platform, a new turbocharged engine, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission in place of a conventional automatic, and a hybrid version for the first time. The old Theta II bearing story ends here; everything on this page is either a recall or an electronics complaint.
Five campaigns are open on this model year and they are not cosmetic. Two are fire risks, one can leave the car unable to move at speed, and one is an air-bag-family defect that Kia already had to re-do once. The newest, a heater blower motor wiring harness that can catch fire, only reached owners' letterboxes in January 2026, so a large share of these cars have not had it done. Treat the VIN check as the purchase, not a formality.
What that means: This is the redesign year, and it is judged here on its recalls rather than on a complaint count, because the federal complaint index for the petrol 2021 Sorento returns a zero we do not believe and will not publish — the details are in the data-confidence note below. What is verifiable is serious enough on its own: five recall campaigns, covering a fuel-pipe leak on the turbo engine, a transmission fault that can cause complete loss of drive power, a tow-hitch fire with a park-outside advisory, an exploding seat-belt pretensioner on the hybrid, and a heater blower harness that can catch fire, with owner letters only mailed in January 2026.

Recall 22V760: the transmission fault that can leave you with no drive
major
2.5L Theta III T-GDI
Kia is recalling 2021 and 2022 Sorentos, along with 2021 to 2023 K5 saloons, because "the vehicle's 'fail-safe' limited-mobility drive mode may be impaired, when prompted by a transmission oil pump malfunction, which can result in a complete loss of drive power." Limited-mobility mode is the crawl-home setting a car drops into when something is wrong; the defect is that it may not work, leaving you with nothing. NHTSA's consequence line is one sentence: "Loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash." The remedy is unusually generous — "Dealers will inspect and replace the transmission, as necessary. Dealers will also update the transmission control unit software. All repairs will be performed free of charge." Kia's code is SC250. Car and Driver ran a 2021 Sorento for 40,000 miles and hit this exact problem: after shuddering, stalling and two software attempts, "they replaced the transmission with a refurbished unit under warranty… ultimately Kia issued a recall for some 70,000 Kia sorrentos and k5s equipped with this transmission for transmission related issues." That repair took 24 days.

This is a 2.5L Theta III T-GDI problem. The 2.4L GDI Theta II, 2.0L Turbo GDI Theta II, 3.3L GDI Lambda II V6, 2.5L Theta III GDI, and 1.6L Turbo hybrid don’t share it.
Recall 21V519: a fuel leak at the high-pressure pump, on the turbo onlymajor
2.5L Theta III T-GDI
Kia is recalling 2021 Sorentos and 2021 to 2022 K5s "equipped with 2.5L turbocharged engines" because "fuel may leak at the pipe connection between the high-pressure fuel pump and fuel rail." A high-pressure fuel pump feeds the direct-injection system; the fuel rail is the pipe that distributes petrol to the injectors. NHTSA's consequence: "A fuel leak increases the risk of a fire." Dealers "will inspect and tighten, or replace the fuel pipe as necessary, free of charge", Kia code SC214, with owner letters mailed in July 2021. Because this one is engine-specific, a naturally aspirated 2021 Sorento is not affected — but the VIN lookup will say so definitively and a seller's recollection will not.
Recall 25V649: the heater blower harness fire, and the letters only just went outmajor
This is the newest campaign on the car and the one most likely to still be open. Kia is recalling 2021 to 2023 Sorentos because "the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) blower motor wiring harness may be inadequate, which can result in a fire." The HVAC system is the heating and air-conditioning unit; the blower motor is the fan that pushes air through the vents. NHTSA's consequence line is four words long: "A fire increases the risk of injury." Dealers "will replace the wiring harness and blower motor resistor, free of charge", Kia's code is SC351, and owner notification letters were only mailed on 23 January 2026. NHTSA received the report in September 2025. On a car being sold second-hand right now, this is the campaign a private seller is least likely to know about.
Recall 22V447: an exploding seat-belt pretensioner on the hybridmajor
1.6L Turbo hybrid
This one applies to the hybrid. Kia is recalling 2021 to 2022 Sorento Hybrids and 2022 Sorento Plug-in Hybrids because "in the event of a crash, the front driver-side and/or passenger-side seat belt pretensioner(s) may explode upon deployment." A pretensioner is the small pyrotechnic device that yanks the belt tight in a crash. NHTSA's consequence: "An exploding seat belt pretensioner can project metal fragments into the vehicle, striking vehicle occupants and resulting in injury." The remedy is that dealers secure the pretensioners with a cap, free of charge, Kia code SC241. Read the last line of Kia's own remedy text carefully, because it matters when you check the VIN: "This recall expands and replaces NHTSA recall number 22V-127. Vehicles already repaired under the previous recall will need to have the new remedy completed." A car showing the earlier campaign as done is not finished.
The hybrid's inverter coolant message, and the service action behind itmoderate
1.6L Turbo hybrid
Ten of the twenty-one federal complaints on the 2021 Sorento Hybrid are one message that will not go away: "Refill inverter coolant", or "Replace inverter coolant", displayed on the instrument cluster with the coolant level correct. The inverter is the box that converts battery power to drive the electric motor, and it has its own low-conductivity coolant loop. Owners describe the practical problem well: "The message covers up other information on the display such as digital speed and driving warnings such as lane departure. I feel this is an unsafe condition", and "Been to dealer 6x and no fix." Kia does have a documented answer. Service Action SA515 instructs dealers "to flush out the inverter low-conductivity coolant (BSC-1) on certain 2021-2022MY Sorento HEV (MQ4 HEV) vehicles produced from September 2, 2020 through September 29, 2021… which may exhibit a 'Refill inverter coolant' message displayed on the instrument cluster due to poor flow of coolant/antifreeze inside the low-conductivity coolant pipe." HEV is Kia's shorthand for the petrol-electric hybrid. If the message appears, ask for SA515 by name — several owners in this file were told there was no fix at all.
Separate from the coolant message, and more serious, is a small cluster of hybrid shutdowns. One 2021 owner: "we were driving the Kia at slow speed due to snow on the road when a warning light came on which we think said hybrid vehicle failure pull over. The car stopped and the traffic lane with the engine off. The car would not start and we were exposed to traffic… If we had been on a beltway with 60 or 65 mph traffic obviously the result would've been quite different." The dealer could not duplicate it or explain it. Another describes the car losing acceleration entirely after a software reprogram, with the message to leave it in park to charge the hybrid battery, and the engine starting for five seconds at a time before shutting off. There is no recall covering this on the 2021 hybrid. It is worth asking a selling dealer directly whether the car has any history of a hybrid system warning, and getting the answer in the service record rather than in conversation.
Recall 22V703: the tow-hitch harness fire, on both petrol and hybridmajor
Recall 22V703 covers 2016 to 2022 Sorentos, 2021 to 2022 Sorento Hybrids and 2022 to 2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrids fitted with a Kia tow-hitch harness, whether original equipment or bought as an accessory through a dealership. Debris and moisture on the harness module's printed circuit board "may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire", parked or driving. Kia advises parking outside and away from structures until it is fixed. Free fuse and/or module replacement, Kia code SC249. Two 2021 hybrid owners filed complaints specifically about the wait: "The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V703000 (Trailer Hitches); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available… the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair." If this is open on the VIN, ask about parts before you agree a handover date.
The dual-clutch transmission's low-speed mannersmoderate
2.5L Theta III T-GDI
The turbocharged 2021 Sorento uses an eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission rather than a conventional torque-converter automatic. A dual-clutch gearbox is essentially two automated manual gearboxes sharing a housing, which makes it fast to shift and awkward at walking pace. Two independent road tests describe the same behaviour without prompting. Car and Driver's long-term car showed "occasional shutters at low speed like in stop and go traffic or like in a parking lot", and after the refurbished transmission went in, "this new refurbished transmission largely fixed the shuttering issues, well, as much as you can expect with the style of dual clutch transmission, so you can still get the occasional shutter." A road-test review of the same year notes "the dual clutch transmission on the all-wheel drive version had a lot of vibration and hesitation from a crawl." Some of this is how the gearbox works and some of it is the fault recall 22V760 addresses. Kia also has a separate technical service bulletin — a technical service bulletin is the fix instruction a manufacturer sends its dealers — covering 2021 to 2023 Sorentos with the 2.5-litre turbo and the eight-speed dual clutch, which improves the electric oil pump control logic on cars that "may exhibit abnormal/harsh shifting, gear slipping, no gear engagement in Drive D and/or Reverse R shift selection" with specific fault codes stored. The way to tell normal from faulty is a long, slow test drive in traffic, not a lap of the block.

The horn warranty extension, and the anti-theft softwareminor
Two small free items. Kia's Warranty Extension Program WTY042 covers "a horn sound malfunction condition on 2021-2025 MY Sorento vehicles manufactured from September 10, 2020, through June 3, 2025, 2021-2025 MY Sorento Hybrid (HEV) vehicles" and later plug-in hybrids, extending coverage "from 5 years / 60,000 miles to 10 years / 120,000 miles." Press the horn during the test drive; if it is dead or weak, that repair is free. And Kia's anti-theft customer-satisfaction campaign CS2304 covers "2021-2023MY Sorento (MQ4a)" among others, upgrading the body control software so the ignition is restricted if a locked car is broken into without the key. Neither is a safety recall.
