Reliability report · 2019 Honda Pilot · Updated July 2026

The transmission-shudder year — engine recall covers it, but the 9-speed is what to test.

2019 is a loud year — 858 complaints — and it carries the heaviest recall list of any Pilot we cover, 13 campaigns. The good news is that the catastrophic connecting-rod-bearing failure is covered here by recall 23V-751, and the timing-belt recall (19V-298) is too. The defining owner complaint, though, is a transmission shudder and stutter during acceleration, often between 25 and 45 mph, sometimes appearing as early as 10,000 miles and in some cases ending in limp mode or a torque-converter/transmission replacement.

The recall sheet is worth reading closely. A small number of 2019–20 Pilots had incomplete front-frame welds (19V-784) — for those, Honda offered to repurchase or replace the vehicle. Two software recalls (20V-439, 20V-440) and a MOST-cable recall (23V-431) address a rearview camera and instrument panel that can go blank, and there's a curtain-airbag-clip recall (18V-848) and a tire recall (21V-165). Most are free software or inspections. Buy a 2019 with the recalls verified, the engine recall closed, and — above all — the transmission driven hard and felt for shudder.

Canary status

Squawking

What that means: 858 federal complaints and the longest recall sheet of any Pilot year (13 campaigns). The connecting-rod-bearing recall (23V-751) covers 2019, so the worst engine failure has a free fix — but the standout complaint pattern is a transmission shudder and hesitation, and the recall list runs from a rare frame-weld defect to rearview-camera software.

Transmission shudder, stutter and limp mode

major

The signature 2019 owner complaint: a shudder or stutter during acceleration, most noticeable at light throttle between about 25 and 45 mph, sometimes present from as little as 10,000 miles. On some cars it escalates — owners report the vehicle dropping into limp mode, losing propulsion and shifting itself to neutral at highway speed, or needing a transmission replaced under warranty and then failing again. A mechanic working a 2019 EX-L (a 6-speed car) traced hard shifts around 40 mph to a third-gear clutch-pressure switch (code P0848), fixing it with a fluid change and switch replacement. The pattern spans both the 6-speed and 9-speed. Test-drive extensively at low-to-moderate speed and treat any shudder or hesitation as a price-negotiation — or walk-away — item.

Connecting-rod-bearing and timing-belt recalls — 23V-751, 19V-298major

2019 is covered by the connecting-rod-bearing recall (23V-751): the bearing can wear and seize, destroying the engine, and dealers inspect and repair or replace it free. It also carries the timing-belt recall (19V-298), where belt teeth can separate and stall the engine — a free inspection and belt/engine repair (Honda code L4M). Both are the serious mechanical safety nets for this year; confirm both show completed by VIN and treat any cold-start knock as disqualifying regardless of paperwork.

Rearview-camera and instrument-panel software — 20V-439, 20V-440, 23V-431moderate

A cluster of 2019 recalls addresses the same family of failures: the rearview camera and instrument panel going blank. Recall 20V-439 covers instrument-panel software that can hide oil-pressure, speedometer and gear-position readouts and the camera image; 20V-440 covers central-network software affecting the camera; and 23V-431 replaces a Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST — a fiber-optic data network) cable connector that can blank the camera. Honda also ran a MOST-communication warranty extension for 2019–20 cars. Mechanics report the connectors are fragile and sometimes need rework beyond the recall. All are free by VIN; verify each is closed and test the camera and cluster on the drive.

Frame-weld, airbag-clip, tire, fuel-pump and sensor recallsmoderate

The rest of the long 2019 list: incomplete front-frame welds (19V-784) on a small number of 2019–20 Pilots — Honda offered repurchase or replacement for affected cars, so this one is worth checking specifically; a center-pillar-trim-clip recall affecting curtain-airbag deployment (18V-848); an over-cured Continental tire recall (21V-165); the fuel-pump recall (21V-215, later expanded by 23V-858); the hood-latch campaign (21V-932); the seat-weight-sensor campaign (26V-332); and the salt-belt rear-subframe-corrosion campaign (26V-365). All are free by VIN.
