Eight years and two very different vans. The 2016 and 2017 finish the fourth generation with an engine problem — the fuel-saving system shuts down three cylinders and their piston rings wear out. Then the 2018 redesign detonates: 946 complaints, the most of any Odyssey we track, and a fifth-generation story that is all electronics and sliding doors rather than engines. The counts fall every single year after that, down to 90 in 2023. Here's the whole thing, year by year.

✕ Years to avoid
The loudest year — and the camera nobody covers. 946 complaints, more than any other Odyssey, and sixteen recalls. Two of them are the good news: recall 23V-751 covers a connecting-rod bearing that can seize and destroy the engine, and 18V-795 replaces sliding-door latches that can let a door open while you drive — both free. The bad news is the windshield camera that runs Honda Sensing. When it fails, adaptive cruise, lane-keeping, collision mitigation and auto high-beams all fail together, usually just past warranty, and no recall or warranty extension covers it. Buyable with the recalls closed, the camera confirmed working, and the fuel-injector warranty extension checked by VIN.
Twenty recall campaigns — the heaviest paperwork in the range. 900 complaints and twenty recalls, more than any other Odyssey year. Almost all of that work is free, including the rod-bearing engine recall and a timing-belt recall where the belt teeth can strip and stall the van. This year also adds recall 18V-664, where the airbag control unit may fail to deploy the airbags at all. The same uncovered windshield-camera failure as the 2018 applies. The compensation is real, though: Honda's fuel-injector warranty extension runs to ten years or 150,000 miles on this year and transfers to you as a used buyer.
✓ Years to hunt for
The quietest Odyssey we track. 90 complaints and five recalls, both the lowest in the range — against the 2018's 946, that is a different vehicle in service terms. No engine, transmission or sliding-door campaign reaches this year. One recall does deserve real attention: 24V-114 covers a steering gearbox that wasn't tightened properly, letting water corrode and bind the gears, which Honda says can mean a loss of steering control. Dealers replace the whole steering rack free. Check that first, then check the boot floor for damp, because water reaching the power-tailgate electronics is this year's main owner-paid problem.
Nearly as quiet, and nothing needs taking apart. 127 complaints and nine recalls, all free — seats, tyres, mirrors, airbags, a camera connector and the fuel pump. The engine and transmission campaigns that defined the launch years are gone, as is the airbag-software recall's reach beyond it. What survives in a year this quiet are two things you can find yourself: rear coil springs breaking, described as a loud metallic snap with the back of the van rocking, and an auto idle-stop system that sometimes won't restart the engine at a junction. Neither is covered, both are checkable on an inspection and a proper test drive.
