Reliability report · 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 · Updated July 2026

Launch year of the new truck — same DFM lifter risk as the Silverado, plus a couple of Sierra-only quirks to check.

2019 launched the current-generation Sierra, and launch-year growing pains fill the file: ten recalls including battery-cable, driveshaft, and pretensioner items that carry stall or fire risk, plus a wave of remote-start electronic-brake-warning failures ('Brake System Failure, 62 mph top speed'). Both bodies sold in 2019 — the new T1XX and the carryover Limited — are covered here.

The bigger story is shared with the Silverado: 2019 introduced Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM), whose lifters fail more often and earlier than the old AFM, plus an oil-cooler-line leak GM covered under a Customer Satisfaction Program. Sierra-specific things to check: the MultiPro powered tailgate (a slam-open complaint) and the rear sliding-window leak. Same truck under the skin — see the 2019 Silverado 1500 report.

Canary status

Squawking

What that means: First year of the T1XX Sierra and the first year of Dynamic Fuel Management — a lifter system mechanics say fails more often and earlier than the old AFM. Ten recalls, several fire- or brake-related. Add the Sierra's MultiPro tailgate and the launch-year electronic-brake-warning wave, and it's a buy-with-the-checks-done truck.

5.3L / 6.2L Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) lifter failure

major

2019 is the pivot from AFM to DFM, and it's a durability downgrade: DFM can deactivate any of all eight cylinders, doubling the problematic two-piece lifters and running deactivated more of the time, so lifter failure comes more often and at lower mileage. Symptoms are a tick, misfire, power loss, sometimes a 'pop' and sudden shutdown; repair is $3,000–$10,000. No blanket recall — a class action alleges the defect and GM repairs reactively. A cold-start valvetrain tick is a walk-away; a DFM disabler or documented lifter history is the protection.

Engine oil-cooler line leak — Customer Satisfaction Programmajor

GM ran a Customer Satisfaction Program for 2019 trucks covering engine oil-cooler (EOC) lines that leak and detach at the crimp joints — worse in cold weather. A Sierra Denali owner in the file describes it exactly: 'Turn off engine, no oil pressure' at 30 mph, the dealer finding the oil-cooler line detached at 77,000 miles. Continued driving after a detachment risks loss of propulsion and engine damage. The remedy replaces the lines, oil, and filter. Some owners find their VIN isn't included and pay out of pocket — confirm eligibility and whether the work was done.

MultiPro tailgate slam-open (Sierra-specific)moderate

The Sierra's signature feature is the MultiPro multi-function powered tailgate — and a 2019 owner reported it slamming open rather than lowering gently, striking a child in the chest, both from the key fob and the dash button. It's a GMC-exclusive item not found on the Silverado, and there's no recall. On any Sierra with the powered tailgate, exercise every tailgate function and watch for abrupt, uncontrolled motion.

Rear sliding-window leaks and launch-year brake/electrical recallsmoderate

Two launch-year clusters. The power sliding rear window (2019–2022 crew cabs) can leak where the sliding pane meets the frame, wetting the headliner and killing the backup camera. And a wave of remote-start electronic-brake-control failures throws 'Brake System Failure 62 mph top speed / Service ESC / reduced steering assist' — addressed by EBCM software recalls 19V889 and 20V055 (both free). Several fire/stall recalls (battery cable 19V888, driveshaft 20V650, pretensioner 19V814) round out the year. Check the rear headliner for staining and confirm every recall by VIN.

8-speed transmission shuddermoderate

The 2019 trucks pair some engines with the 8-speed automatic, which carries the same shudder and hard 1–2 shift the third generation was known for — enough to feed a class action on 2019–2020 models. Sierra owners report it 'shakes at all speeds' with hard shifts that 'chirp the rear tires.' The 10-speed on other trims is much better. Test-drive for shudder and prefer the 10-speed or a documented fluid service.
