The Silverado's twin in a nicer suit — same two expensive habits, so buy one that's been checked, not promised.

The 2016 Sierra 1500 is the GMC-badged Silverado — same GMT K2XX platform, same 5.3L/6.2L EcoTec3 engines, same 8L90 transmission, same GM recalls and programs. Everything in the 2016 Silverado report applies here, and the buying discipline is the same: the Active Fuel Management (AFM) lifters and the 8-speed shudder are the two things that cost real money once the warranty is gone.

Two items show up loudly in the Sierra's own federal file: vacuum-pump brake-assist loss (a hard pedal at low speed, covered by recall 19V645) and a rear-window defroster that can overheat and shatter the glass (Customer Satisfaction Program N192265660). What that means: Mechanically identical to the 2016 Silverado 1500: the 5.3L's Active Fuel Management lifters and the 8-speed 8L90's shudder are the two expensive, out-of-warranty patterns. Sierra's federal complaint count is much lower than the Silverado's, but that reflects lower sales and GMC's fragmented complaint indexing, not a different truck.

5.3L Active Fuel Management (AFM) lifter failure

The 5.3L V8's cylinder-deactivation lifters can collapse, causing a tick, misfire, power loss, and often a bent pushrod and camshaft damage — a $3,000–$10,000 repair with no recall behind it. A Sierra owner in the file describes exactly this: 'serious lifter / cam issue, dealer says total engine replacement,' denied because the truck was past 100,000 miles. A nationwide class action alleges the defect while GM repairs reactively. An AFM disabler (~$150) is cheap insurance; a cold-start valvetrain tick is a walk-away.

8-speed 8L90 shudder and harsh shiftingmajor

The 8L90 eight-speed brings a shudder you feel through the truck plus harsh, clunky shifts; the older 6L80's torque converter also has a high failure rate. GM's fix is a fluid flush with revised fluid; a rebuild or replacement runs $4,000–$6,000. Sierra owners report the classic pattern — 'jerks the whole truck' downshifting, lurches from a stop. Feel for shudder at light throttle 25–45 mph and weigh the service records.

The loudest cluster in the Sierra's own 2016 file: the mechanical vacuum pump loses output over time, giving a hard pedal and lost braking at low speeds — owners describe nearly rolling into cars in parking lots. A firm pedal and a 'Service brake assist' message are the tells; verify the recall was done by VIN.

A Sierra-file standout: the rear-window defroster can overheat and shatter the rear glass, sometimes on remote-start with the defroster auto-on — one owner reported it smoking and catching fire before the glass broke. GM ran Customer Satisfaction Program N192265660 (Rear Window Defroster Thermal Events). The owner workaround is pulling the defroster fuse. Check whether the program was performed and test the defroster.

A/C condenser and frame rustmoderate

Two carryover GM-truck realities: the A/C condenser can crack with no recall (~$1,000, compressor sometimes too), and the factory wax frame coating flakes with age so salt-belt trucks rust around the fuel tank — a Sierra owner reported the frame rusted through with 'the bed touching the cab.' Run the A/C cold, look for the upgraded-condenser mark in the top-right corner, and inspect the frame rails and tank straps closely on any Northern truck.
