Reliability report · 2021 Ford Edge · Updated July 2026

The year the Edge quiets down — the noise is now screens and a recall for ST and Sport engines.

The 2021 is where the Edge gets quiet: 95 federal complaints, well under a tenth of the peak year. The coolant story is gone and the eight-speed shudder shows up only in small numbers. The most common gripe now is the SYNC4 touchscreen — the display can go blank or freeze, sometimes taking the backup camera and climate controls with it. Ford treats this as a software problem (replacing the module often doesn't fix it), though one owner paid $1,500 for the computer behind the screen.

The item with teeth is engine-specific: on 2.7L and 3.0L 'Nano' EcoBoost cars — the Edge ST and Sport — the intake valves can break and destroy the engine (recall 24V-635, from a federal investigation). The remedy is a free dealer cycle-test and, if it fails, a free engine replacement, backed by a 10-year coverage program. On a four-cylinder or base V6 2021 this recall doesn't apply; on an ST or Sport, it's the must-verify. A 2021 with the camera recalls and (if applicable) the intake-valve test done is a genuinely good used pick.

Canary status

Chirping

What that means: Only 95 federal complaints, a steep drop from the earlier years. The mechanical failures fade; what's left is a SYNC4 touchscreen that can go blank, the eight-speed's low-speed shudder in smaller numbers, and — on the 2.7L and 3.0L ST/Sport engines — an intake-valve recall that can replace the engine for free.

2.7L / 3.0L intake-valve recall — ST and Sport only

major
  • 2.7L EcoBoost V6

The 2021's most serious item applies only to the twin-turbo 'Nano' EcoBoost V6 engines — the 2.7L and 3.0L found in the Edge ST and Sport. Their intake valves can break while driving, which can destroy the engine and cut drive power (recall 24V-635, arising from federal investigation EA23002; Ford 24S55). The remedy is a free dealer engine cycle-test and, if it fails, a free engine replacement — and Ford's associated program provides no-cost engine coverage for 10 years after the inspection. A mechanic transcript separately notes these engines can consume oil and foul spark plugs, so watch the oil habit. If you're buying an ST or Sport, verify the cycle-test was performed; on a non-Nano 2021, this recall doesn't apply.

SYNC4 touchscreen blackout — a software gremlinmoderate

The most common complaint on the 2021 is the SYNC4 touchscreen going blank or freezing, sometimes taking the backup camera, climate controls, or defroster with it. Ford's service material treats this as an APIM (Accessory Protocol Interface Module — the module behind the screen) software problem and states that replacing the module doesn't resolve it; the fix is software. Still, one owner in the federal file paid $1,500 to replace the computer behind the screen. Several camera recalls (below) address related blank-image faults. If the screen misbehaves on a test drive, this is a known pattern — confirm the latest software update and camera recalls rather than paying for a module.

Rearview-camera recall chainmoderate

The 2021 sits under a stack of superseding rearview-camera recalls: a software error blanking or distorting the reversing image (22V-151, Ford 22S14), a re-do for cars repaired incorrectly under that campaign (25V-160, Ford 25S28), a further APIM software campaign for delayed/frozen/absent images (25V-315, Ford 25S49), and an APIM-overheat campaign (26V-124, Ford 26S09). Because each superseded the last, a camera 'fixed' once may still need the newest remedy — check the VIN for the most recent one.

Eight-speed low-speed shudder — smaller, still presentmoderate

  • 8-speed automatic (8F35)

The eight-speed's low-speed shudder and hesitation still appear on the 2021, just in far smaller numbers than 2019-2020. Ford issued shudder service bulletins, and on AWD cars a low-speed-turning shudder can trace to the rear drive unit's internal clutch (addressed by a service-bulletin clutch kit). Drive it for a shudder at 20-40 mph; it's a known-issue tell even on this quieter year.

Seat-belt retractor recallmoderate

The 2021 also has a driver seat-belt recall: the driver's seat-belt retractor pretensioner may not function correctly in a crash (recall 21V-377, Ford 21C13; a FMVSS 208 non-compliance). Dealers replace the retractor pretensioner free. Verify it by VIN.
