Reliability report · 2021 Chevrolet Traverse · Updated July 2026

The year the numbers collapse: 86 complaints against 212 the year before and 452 in 2018. Three recalls, one of which only applies to wheelchair conversions. The nine-speed shudder is still in the file, just much quieter.

This is where the Traverse quiets down. Eighty-six complaints across a full model year is a low number for a high-volume three-row, and unlike 2018 or 2019 there is no single cluster that owns the file. The nine-speed automatic still appears, but in ones and twos rather than dozens: 'The car sometimes will not accelerate in the 25-35 mph range and will begin to shudder and shake.' 'I AM HAVING A LOT OF TRANSMISSION SHUDDER ESPECIALLY WHEN ACCELERATING.' 'Car was late shifting into gear. Taken to dealership and replaced tourque cpnverters for 3800.' GM's service bulletin for 'Shudders or Shakes at Low Speeds' covers 2019 through 2024, so the condition is documented on this year, and behind it sits the internal 9T65 Automatic Transmission Replacement Pilot Program, a dealer process document rather than any kind of coverage. There is no recall.

The front exhaust pipe bracket is the one genuinely recurring item, and it is free to fix. 'Front exhaust pipe is seperating.' 'Both exhaust pipes before the catalytic converter are cracked and leaking at the same welded mounting bracket. One of them GM is cove[ring] under the [programme].' One owner had it done and found the other side going too: 'HAD RECALL DONE (N222385510) EXHAUST LEAKING FROM ROTTING AWAY PIPE, REPAIRED WITH NEW PIPE, BUT PIPE ON OTHER SIDE WAS ALSO LEAKING EXHAUST.' An owner who paid reports the cost of getting it wrong: 'Vehicle with less than 50000 miles has 2 broken flex pipes on the exhaust system that is going to cost me $1,932.66.' GM's Special Coverage names 2021 directly, and the 2023 version of the same bulletin states terms of fifteen years or 150,000 miles from the in-service date, regardless of ownership, with reimbursement for owners who already paid. Nobody should be paying $1,932.66 for this without a dealer checking the VIN first.

The rest is scattered and worth knowing rather than fearing. Alternators are a new thread: 'Alternator fail before 60,000 miles' and 'MY ALTERNATOR WENT OUT AT 40K MILES, IT WAS REPLACED AND NOW WENT OUT AGAIN AT 75K. I HAVE GONE THRU 7 BATTERIES SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR BRAND NEW.' Shift to Park, the message that stops the car switching off, persists even though GM's thirteen bulletins about it all stop at 2019: 'Shift to park message comes on 50% of the time when shutting down the engine. Tapping the shift lever forward sometimes removes the message.' There are single reports of reduced power steering assist, infotainment blackouts and a broken rear toe link. Two of the three recalls, an air bag calibration fix and a roof-rail air bag harness connector, are quick free jobs. The third is a Braun conversion recall that does not apply unless your car is one.

Canary status

Chirping

What that means: 86 federal complaints, less than a fifth of the model's worst year, and three recalls of which one applies only to Braun wheelchair-accessible conversions. Nothing dominates the file. The nine-speed automatic's shudder is still present and one owner was quoted $3,800 for torque converters, so it has not been engineered out, but it is no longer the wall of complaints it was on 2018 and 2019. The front exhaust pipe bracket is here too and it is covered free by GM. What is new is a small alternator thread. A sound used family car with a specific list of things to check.

Front exhaust pipe bracket, and the free coverage most owners do not know about

moderate

The most repeated item in an otherwise scattered file. A weld holding the mounting bracket to the front exhaust pipe cracks, the bracket separates and a hole opens in the pipe; the symptom is a rattle that becomes a roar. 'Front exhaust pipe is seperating.' 'Both exhaust pipes before the catalytic converter are cracked and leaking at the same welded mounting bracket.' 'The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the front exhaust pipe made an abnormally loud so[und].' GM's Special Coverage, which names 2021 directly: 'certain vehicles may have a condition that could cause the mounting bracket on the front exhaust pipe to separate from the pipe. If this condition occurs, a hole may develop in the exhaust pipe at the bracket location, and a rattling or increased exhaust noise may be heard. Dealers are to replace the front exhaust pipe as necessary. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.' The version of the bulletin filed for 2023 cars is the only one that states terms, and they are the most generous anywhere in this model: 'a period of 15 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership,' plus reimbursement for owners who already paid. One owner in this file paid $1,932.66 for two flex pipes. Another quotes GM's internal number for the programme, N222385510, from his own paperwork; that number is owner-reported rather than read from a GM document, so use it as a pointer for the service desk. And note that a Special Coverage is not a safety recall, which matters if a car carries a branded title: an owner-mechanic on video was refused the free repair for exactly that reason.

Nine-speed shudder, quieter but not gonemoderate

The 9T65 nine-speed automatic still produces the same complaint it did on 2018, just far less often. 'The car sometimes will not accelerate in the 25-35 mph range and will begin to shudder and shake. This can be very dangerous when attempting to m[erge].' 'I AM HAVING A LOT OF TRANSMISSION SHUDDER ESPECIALLY WHEN ACCELERATING. NOTICED THAT CONSUMER REPORTS STATED IN THEIR MAGAZINE THAT THIS HAS BEEN [an issue].' 'I was driving and without any type of warning the car stopped shifting so I was barely touching the gas but my tac was all the way up.' And the one with a number attached: 'Car was late shifting into gear. Taken to dealership and replaced tourque cpnverters for 3800. Car gets fluids checked 4,000 miles later transmi[ssion].' GM's paperwork for this year is a service bulletin covering 2019 to 2024 providing 'a procedure to correct a customer concern of Shudders or Shakes at Low Speeds,' preceded by Preliminary Information telling technicians to 'perform a transmission fluid drain and fill to correct a TCC shudder concern.' TCC is the torque converter clutch, the part that locks the engine directly to the gearbox at cruising speed. Behind all of it is GM's internal 9T65 Automatic Transmission Replacement Pilot Program bulletin, republished across 2018 to 2024, which is a dealer process document and pays for nothing. No recall covers this. A test drive at 25 to 40 mph under light throttle is the whole diagnostic.

Shift to Park, past the end of GM's bulletinsmoderate

The dash reads Shift to Park while the car is already in park, and the engine will not switch off. 'Shift to park message comes on 50% of the time when shutting down the engine. Tapping the shift lever forward sometimes removes the message, oth[er times not].' 'Shift to park warning comes on every time I put my car into park. I can give the gear shift a hard tap so it can go into park and my car will tur[n off].' 'I own a 2021 Chevy Traverse and h[ave a] persistent Shift to Park message when vehicle is in Park.' The awkward part is that GM published thirteen bulletins about this message and every single one stops at model year 2019, so a 2021 owner is reporting a condition the manufacturer's own service literature does not acknowledge on their car. What that means practically is no documented procedure and no goodwill lever. The useful part comes from two mechanics who diagnose it on video: it is the shifter assembly and its park position sensor, not the transmission. One scans a car and reports 'no fault in the engine, no fault in the transmission,' then opens the steering column trim and points at the sensor. The other simply replaces the shifter assembly. If a shop starts talking about the gearbox for a Shift to Park message, get a second opinion.

Alternators and batteries, a thread specific to this yearmoderate

New in 2021 and not visible on the earlier years: repeated alternator failures, often taking batteries with them. 'Alternator fail before 60,000 miles. Had the car almost 3 years and children in it. Apparently a known common issue yet no recall.' 'MY ALTERNATOR WENT OUT AT 40K MILES, IT WAS REPLACED AND NOW WENT OUT AGAIN AT 75K. I HAVE GONE THRU 7 BATTERIES SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR BRAND NEW.' Other electrical reports in the same file point the same direction: a car that 'inadvertently lost motive power and stal[led]' while driving at 20 mph, radios that go blank and will not reset, and a check engine light paired with a cooling fan that runs on for minutes after shutdown. No recall or GM programme in our data covers the alternator on this year. It is a repair rather than a catastrophe, but a car on its second alternator and its seventh battery is telling you something, and a charging-system test is a five-minute check any shop can do before you buy.

Three recalls, and only two of them apply to an ordinary carmoderate

Recall 21V-472 (GM number N212340220) is unusual in that the defect was introduced by the dealer network rather than the factory: on certain 2021 Traverse and Buick Enclave vehicles, 'during service by dealers, certain vehicles may have received incorrect air bag calibration software that may affect frontal airbag deployment.' Dealers update the calibration free; letters went out 29 July 2021. Recall 22V-210 (GM number N212352140) covers 2020 to 2022 Traverses and 2021 to 2022 Enclaves: 'the harness connector to the left or right side roof rail air bag may have incompatible electrical terminals, which could prevent the air bags from deploying in a crash.' Dealers replace the connector free; letters went out 29 April 2022. The third, recall 21V-817, is filed by Braun Corporation rather than General Motors and covers only 2020 and 2021 Traverses converted to wheelchair-accessible spec with the Power In-floor Ramp, where 'the screw and clip that hold the inner wheel-well plastic shroud in place may chafe against the transmission case, possibly resulting in a transmission fluid leak.' If your Traverse is not a Braun conversion, that campaign does not apply to it; it is counted here only because NHTSA counts it against the model year.

What you no longer have to worry aboutminor

Worth stating plainly, because the earlier years of this generation are genuinely rough and the 2021 is not. The complaint total falls from 452 on the 2018 to 212 on the 2020 to 86 here, a drop of more than 80 percent from the peak. The dense clusters that make 2018 and 2019 hard to recommend, dozens of transmission replacements and a wall of Shift to Park reports, are down to single filings. The tire, fuel pump and roof-rail-inflator recalls that piled up on 2020 do not reach this year. There is no engine programme on this year comparable to the 2018 piston oil control ring Customer Support Program, whose remedy was a new engine. And the one problem that does recur, the exhaust bracket, is the only Traverse defect with genuinely generous free coverage behind it. What is left is a large, comfortable, ordinary three-row with a specific short list: drive it for shudder, check the charging system, listen for exhaust rattle, and confirm two free air bag campaigns.
