Reliability report · 2018 Toyota Sienna · Updated July 2026

Less than half the noise of 2017, but the eight-speed is still in the file — a late-build 2018 is the one to want.

2018 is the year the third-generation Sienna starts getting better. The complaint file drops from 152 to 69, and the reason is the eight-speed automatic: Toyota changed its internals and its software partway through the year. The independent Toyota mechanic in our sources scopes the fault to '2017 to early 2018' and says that from mid-2018 onward he does not see it. Our federal data supports him only partly — the transmission is still the largest complaint cluster on this year, including one van throwing a fault code and dropping into two-wheel drive at around 112,000 miles. So treat a 2018 as a good bet that still needs the test drive.

Two other things define this year. It is the last model year Toyota's sliding-door class-action settlement reaches, so a 2018 is the newest Sienna with any factory help on cables, hinges and door latches — though the coverage runs ten years from the van's first day in service, so that help is expiring now. And 2018 has a recall no other Sienna year has: one production lot of ten-spoke alloy wheels that can crack at the spokes.

Canary status

Chirping

What that means: 69 federal complaints, well under half of 2017's 152 — and the transmission cluster is smaller in proportion as well as in count. Toyota revised the eight-speed's internals and software during this model year, and the independent mechanic in our sources draws the line at mid-2018. The federal file shows the improvement is real but not absolute: 2018 owners are still reporting the whine. This is the last year the sliding-door settlement reaches.

The UA80 eight-speed — improved mid-year, but still in the file

major
  • 3.5L V6

The eight-speed automatic fitted from 2017 produces a whine on acceleration that develops into hesitation, harsh or erratic shifting, and eventually failure. Toyota's own repair bulletin names 2017–2018 Highlander and Sienna together and lists the fault codes, and Toyota opened a Customer Support Program — quiet extended coverage outside the normal warranty — for both years under code ZJC / POL19-04, blaming a washer tab inside the transmission that 'was not sufficiently bent during assembly', letting a nut work loose. Our mechanic source says Toyota fixed it during 2018: 'Toyota did change the internals of the transmission as well as the software… starting mid-2018 all the way to 2020 we do not have any issues.' Be aware that the federal complaint file does not fully agree with him. 2018 owners are still filing about a whining noise, hesitation from a stop, and erratic shifting, including one van that threw code P27137F and dropped into two-wheel-drive mode, and one dealer-confirmed transmission failure at around 112,000 miles. Read that as: much better odds than a 2017, but not a fault you can skip checking. There is a second, separate bulletin covering a transmission side-cover leak on 2018–2020 vans, which Toyota also listed as under investigation.

Alloy wheels can crack at the spokes — recall 18V-130major

Unique to this model year. Toyota recalled 2018 Siennas built with a specific lot of ten-spoke alloy wheels from one production facility: 'these wheels may not have been properly cooled during manufacturing. As a result, the wheels may crack in the spokes from an impact while driving,' and a cracked wheel can separate from the hub. Dealers inspect and replace as needed, free; Toyota's internal code is J0J and it began notifying owners by telephone in February 2018. Because the remedy depends on where the wheel was made, a van can pass inspection and keep its original wheels — so confirm what was actually done, not just that the recall closed.

Sliding-door hardware — the last year the settlement coversmajor

Power sliding doors fail four ways on this generation: the cable that pulls the door snaps and hangs down above the rear tyre; the centre hinge corrodes so the door jams just as it closes; and the front or rear lock assembly seizes so the door will not latch. Toyota's class-action settlement produced a Customer Confidence Program under code ZKI, plus two Warranty Enhancement Programs — ZH4 for the front lock assemblies, ZH5 for the rear — and Toyota's own bulletin states the terms: the cable sub-assembly, centre hinge and fuel-filler door are covered for '10 years from the subject vehicle's date of first use, regardless of mileage', while ZH4 and ZH5 run nine years from first use plus one more, also with no mileage cap. 2018 is the newest model year those programs reach. Two cautions from the federal file: one 2018 owner reports a broken door cable and being told it was 'not covered on current service bulletin POL19-02 dated 06/19/2019', which is a reminder that the programs are scoped by VIN and by part, not just by year; and a long-term owner of a comparable van had the latches replaced at around 50,000 miles and saw the fault return by 85,000.

Two fuel-pump recalls and the settlement behind themmajor

The 2018 Sienna is covered by both the original low-pressure fuel-pump recall, 20V-012, and its expansion, 20V-682, which explicitly names 2017–2020 Sienna (Toyota code 20TA02). The pump inside the fuel tank can fail, and Toyota's own summary is direct: 'if the fuel pump fails, the engine can stall while driving.' Dealers fit an improved pump free. A federal court then approved a settlement on 20 December 2022 obliging Toyota to run a Customer Support Program for certain 2014–2020 vehicles whose pumps were repaired under this recall — its terms are not stated in the bulletin summary, so verify them in the bulletin PDF. That program matters here because 2018 owners in the federal file report hesitation and stalling continuing after the recall repair, plus one fuel line under the intake that ruptured on startup.

The direct-injection V6's oil leaksmoderate

  • 3.5L V6

The 2018 uses the updated 3.5-litre V6 with direct injection — fuel sprayed straight into the cylinder rather than into the intake — internally the 2GR-FKS. Toyota has two bulletins about it leaking oil: one for a leak from the camshaft-sensor bolt holes on 2017–2018 Sienna and Highlander, and one for a leak from the No. 2 oil pan on 2017–2020 Sienna, narrowed in a later revision to engines whose serial number begins with F or G. Toyota listed the oil-pan leak as 'currently under investigation' and asked technicians to photograph it before repair, which means the root cause was still open when the bulletin issued. Our mechanic source adds that the water pump on this engine still leaks despite an updated part — 'I've replaced a bunch of them already on 17, 18, 19s.' Have it on a lift and look for oil and coolant before you buy.

Suspension, infotainment and the odds and endsmoderate

Front struts leaking is close to a maintenance item on this van according to our mechanic source, and he names the cause: water off the windscreen collects in the cowl and sits on top of the strut mount, rotting it. He also flags front lower control-arm bushings wearing fast, testable by braking hard at low speed with a light hand on the wheel — a sharp jump to one side is the tell. On infotainment, Toyota has four separate bulletins covering the Entune 3.0 system on 2018–2020 vans: apps failing to download, Bluetooth not connecting automatically, and reboots. Our mechanic source is resigned about it: 'radio problems… rebooting, freezing up, to flat out radio doesn't even start.' Also in this year's federal file: a sunroof that shattered at 70 mph, water running into the cabin and pooling on the front seats, and Safety Connect failures. Three of the seven recalls are mobility-conversion recalls belonging to Braun and Vantage, applicable only to wheelchair-converted vans.
