2023 is the quietest Corolla in our data by complaint volume and adds a genuinely improved infotainment system that fixes the earlier cars' buggy screens. The catch is a run of steering recalls — a spiral-cable weld that can disable the driver airbag, a steering intermediate shaft that can crack, and a re-do of the spiral-cable fix for cars repaired incorrectly the first time. All are free, but there are several, so verification matters more here than on any other year.

On the hybrid there's also a skid-control software recall affecting brake assist when cornering — again a free update. None of these is an owner-pays repair; a 2023 with every recall closed is arguably the strongest used Corolla in the range.

Steering-column spiral cable — driver airbag risk (23V-480, re-do 25V-040)

The recall to verify first. On 2023 Corollas an electrical connection inside the steering column's spiral cable assembly (the coiled wiring that keeps the airbag connected as the wheel turns) may be poorly welded, and if it separates the driver's airbag can be deactivated — a federal safety-standard non-compliance. Recall 23V-480 replaces the spiral cable free. A follow-up recall, 25V-040, re-addresses cars that were repaired incorrectly the first time. Because there are two bites at this, confirm by VIN that the current status is fully remedied, not just that an earlier repair was attempted.

Steering intermediate shaft may fracture — 24V-878major

Recall 24V-878 covers 2023–2024 Corolla and Corolla Hybrid: cracks formed during manufacturing can cause the steering intermediate shaft to fracture and the shaft to detach from the column, which would mean a loss of steering control. Dealers replace the shaft free. This is a serious mechanism, but a completed recall fully resolves it — verify it's closed by VIN before buying.

Corolla Hybrid only: recall 24V-708 covers a skid-control electronic-control-unit (ECU) software error that can cause a loss of power brake assist when turning a corner, which can lengthen stopping distance. The fix is a free software update at the dealer. It's the hybrid's one distinctive recall for this year and, like the rest, costs the owner nothing — confirm it's applied on any 2023 Corolla Hybrid.

Skid-control ECU software update (recall)

New infotainment and a crack-prone screenminor

The good news of the 2023: Toyota replaced the older, buggy infotainment system with a new unit that reviewers say simply works, fixing the Bluetooth drop-outs and laggy touch response of the earlier redesign cars. The one carryover caution is that the screen can crack fairly easily. Confirm the display is intact and the new system pairs and responds cleanly on the test drive.
