Reliability report · 2022 Tesla Model Y · Updated July 2026

A year of two halves — the early Austin cars are the rough ones, and the cars built from around September 2022 get the comfort suspension and a better 12-volt battery.

The 2022 is the Model Y's transition year, and the single most useful thing you can know about a specific car is roughly when it was built. Tesla brought Austin production online during 2022, and two independent used-EV channels describe the early cars from that ramp as the worst of the run for panel gaps and paint. Around September 2022 the car quietly improved in ways that show up in daily use: a revised comfort suspension that fixed the model's firm, clunky ride, a lithium-ion 12-volt battery in place of the lead-acid unit that needed replacing more often, acoustic front glass that cuts road noise, and the AMD Ryzen infotainment processor. Ultrasonic parking sensors start disappearing in the same window, which cuts the other way.

On the federal record, two new campaigns arrive and both are Model-Y-only physical repairs: 23V-130, loose bolts securing the second-row seat back frames, which can compromise the seat-belt system in a crash; and 23V-385, a steering wheel fastener that may be loose enough to let the wheel disconnect from the steering column. The suspension-knuckle recall 21V-912 still applies here and ends with this model year. On the software side, 22V-296 covers an infotainment processor that could overheat during fast-charging and lag or restart, blanking the reversing camera and gear display. The front suspension link and bushing wear that dominates 2020 and 2021 is quieter in this file but has not vanished, so the slow-speed listen is still worth doing.

Chirping

What that means: 830 federal complaints, down from 2021, and the hardware picture improves through the year. Two new Model-Y-only recalls appear and both need a shop visit: loose second-row seat back frame bolts, and a steering wheel fastener that can let the wheel disconnect from the column. The suspension-knuckle recall population ends with this year. What matters most to a buyer is the build date: early-2022 Austin cars drew the worst panel-gap and paint complaints of the run, while cars from roughly September onward pick up a revised comfort suspension, a lithium-ion 12-volt battery and acoustic front glass.

Steering wheel fastener can come loose (23V-385)

major

A Model-Y-only recall covering 2022 and 2023 cars: the steering wheel fastener may be loose, and a loose fastener can allow the steering wheel to disconnect from the steering column. That is a loss of steering control, and the fix is physical — Tesla inspects and replaces the fastener at a service center, free of charge. It is a short, cheap job, which is exactly why an unclosed one on a used car tells you something about how the previous owner handled recall notices. Confirm it by VIN before you drive the car home.

Second-row seat back frame bolts (23V-130)major

Another Model-Y-only physical recall on 2022 and 2023 cars: the bolts securing the second-row seat back frames may not have been tightened properly, and a loose seat frame bolt reduces the seat-belt system's performance in a crash. Tesla inspects and tightens as necessary, free. If you carry children in the back — and the Model Y is bought heavily for exactly that — this is the recall to close first. Fold and latch each second-row section on your inspection and push firmly on the seat backs to check they sit solid.

Build date decides the car: early Austin versus late 2022moderate

This is the year's real buying lever, and it is a spec question rather than a fault. Two used-EV trade channels independently describe the early Austin cars as the low point of the run for fit and finish — panel gaps and paint imperfections through roughly the first half of the year. From around September 2022, cars gain a revised comfort suspension that softens the model's notoriously firm ride, a lithium-ion 12-volt battery instead of the lead-acid unit that had to be replaced more often, acoustic front glass that noticeably cuts road noise, a heated steering wheel and the AMD Ryzen infotainment processor. In the same window Tesla began deleting the ultrasonic parking sensors, so a late car parks purely on cameras. Ask for the build date on the driver's door jamb sticker, then check the glass and the 12-volt type, and inspect panel gaps and paint in daylight.

Suspension knuckles, links and bushingsmoderate

Recall 21V-912 — front and rear suspension knuckles that may fracture and let the suspension links separate — covers 2020 through 2022 Model Ys, and 2022 is the last year in its population. Get it confirmed closed. Beyond the recall, the front lateral-link and compliance-link bushings and upper control arm ball joints that dominate the 2020 and 2021 complaint files still appear here, though less often. Tesla later shipped a firmware feature that watches wheel alignment over time specifically for signs of degraded ball joints, bushings and damaged suspension links, which tells you how persistent the pattern is. A slow full-lock circle with the windows down, listening for creak or clunk, still belongs on your inspection.

Infotainment processor overheating during fast-charging (22V-296)moderate

Recall 22V-296 covers 2022 Model Y and Model 3 cars on certain firmware: the infotainment central processing unit can overheat during or before fast-charging and lag or restart, which blanks the center screen — and with it the reversing camera image, gear display, windshield visibility controls and warning lights. Tesla fixed it with an over-the-air update that improves the processor's thermal management. The complaint file also carries non-recall touchscreen restart reports. Confirm the car is on current software, and if you can, watch the screen during a Supercharging session.

Water in the rear cargo well through the liftgatemoderate

Four separate Tesla service bulletins covering 2020-2023 Model Ys report water leaking into the rear trunk area through the liftgate assembly, and 2022 sits squarely inside that span. Owners describe it after rain, snow or a car wash, sometimes reaching the underfloor storage bin. Lift the rear cargo floor and the spare-tire well cover and look for staining, rust or a musty smell — a car that has been quietly wet for years is a corrosion question, not a cosmetic one.

Phantom braking and driver-assist behaviormoderate

As on every Model Y year, a large slice of the complaint file is driver-assist behavior rather than broken parts: hard braking for no visible object on Autopilot or adaptive cruise on the camera-only Tesla Vision system, and Full Self-Driving misjudging intersections. Recalls 23V-085 (Full Self-Driving Beta behavior at intersections) and 23V-838 (the roughly 2-million-vehicle Autosteer campaign) both apply and were remedied over the air. Test the full driver-assist suite on a highway yourself and expect some residual phantom-braking trait rather than a repair.

What you no longer worry aboutminor

For clarity, the 2022 sits outside the populations for the 2020-only front upper control arm bolt recall (20V-709), the 2020-2021 lateral-link fastener recall (21V-835), the 2021-only swapped-camera recall (22V-317) and the caliper and seat-belt fastener recalls that ended with 2021. The heat pump's bad refrigerant-sensor window — the Tesla bulletins name 2020 and 2021 cars — is behind you too, though the heat pump is still an expensive component if it fails. The battery and drive unit stay the car's best part, covered for 8 years and 120,000 miles on Long Range and Performance, 100,000 miles on Standard Range, and a 2022 may still have basic 4-year / 50,000-mile coverage if it is low-mileage.

There was like a solid 12 months where these units were pretty hard — and then the ride quality and the suspension just got way better from early 2022 to late 2022.
