Heat pump and super manifold — the expensive onemajor
Tesla issued eight service bulletins saying 2020 and 2021 Model 3 and Model Y cars may carry refrigerant pressure and temperature sensors in the heat pump that fault over time. When the sensors send bad data the software stops trusting them and shuts the heat pump down, so you lose cabin heat, air conditioning and windshield defrost at once, usually with a 'climate control system requires service' message. An independent EV technician puts the sensor-only repair at roughly $450-$900 at a Tesla service center or $350-$700 at an independent shop. If the failure has moved into the super manifold or the air-conditioning compressor it gets much worse: one owner of a 2020 Long Range was quoted about $2,300 to replace the heat pump and super manifold, then paid $3,694 once damaged lines were found, at 58,600 miles — just past the 50,000-mile basic warranty. A high-pitched squeal from the front trunk area while the car preconditions in freezing weather is the early warning, and it usually means the compressor is already shedding metal into the system. Note that recall 22V-050 is only the software slice of this story (a valve fault that hurt defrost performance) — it does not cover the sensors or the manifold. Test heat and air conditioning on the drive, in both directions.
