Reliability report · 2023 Jeep Wrangler · Updated July 2026

The calmest year in our data on the gas trucks — the 4xe still carries the park-outside battery-fire recall, so the gas Wrangler is the easy buy and the 4xe is the one to vet.

The 2023 is the quietest Wrangler year in our data — 334 complaints — and on the gas trucks it's an easy buy. A mechanic's verdict on the powertrains is clear: the 2.0L turbo and 3.6L V6 are 'really good,' and the one to avoid is the 4xe. The gas truck's list is the familiar death-wobble check plus mostly free recalls, including a steering-column-control-module weld recall that could keep the driver airbag from deploying (24V-199) and a spare-tire-blocks-brake-light recall (23V-565).

The 4xe keeps its cautions: the park-outside high-voltage-battery fire recall (23V-787, superseded by 25V-741), the battery-fuse-heat recall (22V-768, 23V-303), and the engine-shutdown recall (22V-865), backed by a PHEV engine-replacement warranty extension (program XC2). Four genuine 4xe complaints sit on top of the 330 for the standard truck, and every one is a battery-fire or drive-power filing — one citing an IDCM-fault service bulletin covered under the hybrid warranty. Buy a gas 2023 freely once the recalls are closed; buy a 4xe only with remaining hybrid warranty and every battery recall confirmed.

Canary status

Chirping

What that means: 334 federal complaints — the lowest of the JL years in our set — with fourteen recalls that are mostly free software and 4xe battery items. The standard gas Wrangler is a settled, low-complaint buy with the usual death-wobble front-end check. The 4xe plug-in hybrid keeps the park-outside high-voltage-battery fire recall and a battery-fuse recall, so it remains the version that needs coverage and every recall confirmed.

4xe high-voltage battery — fire and fuse recalls

major
  • 4xe PHEV

On the 4xe plug-in hybrid, the high-voltage battery can fail internally and cause a fire while parked or driving, with a park-outside, do-not-charge advisory (23V-787, code 89A — superseded by 25V-741, code 68C). It also carries the battery-fuse recall from incorrect fasteners that can overheat and cause a loss of drive power (22V-768, code Z71; expanded by 23V-303, code 53A). Both remedies are free. Every 4xe complaint in the 2023 file is a battery or drive-power story, one citing an IDCM-fault service bulletin (08-037-24) covered under the 8-year/100,000-mile hybrid warranty. Confirm the fire recall in its newest form before buying — an open one means don't garage or charge the truck.

4xe engine shutdown and warranty coveragemajor

  • 4xe PHEV

The 4xe also has a recall for a loss of communication that can shut the engine down and cause a loss of drive power (22V-865, code ZB7), fixed by reprogramming the hybrid control modules. Chrysler backs the hybrid powertrain with a PHEV engine-replacement warranty extension for misfire faults (program XC2, covering 2023-2025). A mechanic's advice is simply to avoid the 4xe unless it's warranty-covered. Confirm the recall by VIN and the remaining hybrid warranty before committing.

Steering-column airbag weld recall — 24V-199major

A gas-and-hybrid recall worth calling out: the steering-column control module may not be welded properly, which can prevent the driver's airbag from deploying in a crash — an occupant-protection (FMVSS 208) non-compliance spanning several 2023-2024 Stellantis models (24V-199, codes 14B/33B-36B). The remedy is a free inspection and module replacement as needed. An airbag that may not fire is a serious item; confirm 24V-199 shows completed by VIN.

Death wobble, spare-tire brake light, and software recallsmoderate

On the standard gas Wrangler the solid-axle death wobble remains the front-end trait to test for, though it's lightest in the 2023 file — a mechanic ties it to worn ball joints, worse with big tires and lifts, and there's no recall for the wobble itself. The rest is free housekeeping: a spare-tire-obstructs-center-brake-light recall (23V-565), the manual gear-position-sensor recall (23V-641) and clutch recall (23V-116), the hybrid-control defrost recall (24V-111), the instrument-cluster short (24V-652), the camera/brake-light wiring recall (24V-676), a diesel high-pressure-fuel-pump recall (23V-263), and the later steering-pump-wiring fire recall (26V-363, park-outside). Verify the ones that apply.

I wouldn't even touch the 4xe — but the 2.0 turbo and the 3.6 V6 are really good.
