Reliability report · 2022 Jeep Wrangler · Updated July 2026

A quieter JL year on the gas trucks — but the 4xe still carries the battery-fire recall, so the split is buy-the-gas-one-freely, buy-the-4xe-with-care.

The 2022 Wrangler is a calmer year on the gas trucks — 372 complaints against 865 for 2021 — and the standard 3.6L and 2.0L turbo are, in a mechanic's words, 'dead reliable' next to the plug-in hybrid. The gas truck's list is the familiar death-wobble front-end check plus mostly free recalls: a side-marker-light tail-lamp recall (22V-326), a manual-transmission gear-position-sensor recall affecting the rearview camera (23V-641), the clutch recall, and later FMVSS software items.

The 4xe is where the caution stays. It keeps the park-outside high-voltage-battery fire recall (23V-787, superseded by 25V-741), plus a battery-fuse-heat recall from incorrect fasteners (22V-768, expanded by 23V-303) and the engine-shutdown recall (22V-865). Three genuine 4xe complaints sit on top of the 369 for the standard truck, and each is a battery or drive-power story. Buy a gas 2022 with the recalls closed and a tight front end; buy a 4xe only with remaining hybrid warranty and every battery recall confirmed.

Canary status

Chirping

What that means: 372 federal complaints — much lower than the 2021 peak — but still fifteen recalls, most of them free software and 4xe battery items. The standard gas Wrangler is a settled buy with the usual death-wobble check. The 4xe plug-in hybrid keeps the park-outside high-voltage-battery fire recall and a battery-fuse-heat recall, so it's the version that needs coverage and every recall confirmed.

4xe high-voltage battery — fire and fuse-heat recalls

major
  • 4xe PHEV

On the 4xe plug-in hybrid, two battery recalls stack. The high-voltage battery can fail internally and cause a fire while parked or driving, with a park-outside, do-not-charge advisory (23V-787, code 89A — superseded by 25V-741, code 68C). Separately, the battery pack was built with incorrect fasteners securing the 200-amp fuse, which can generate excessive heat and cause a loss of drive power (22V-768, code Z71 — expanded by 23V-303, code 53A). Both remedies are free. On any 4xe, confirm the fire recall in its newest form and the fuse recall before you buy — an open fire recall means you shouldn't garage or charge the truck.

4xe engine shutdown and warranty programsmajor

  • 4xe PHEV

The 4xe also carries a recall for a loss of communication that can shut the engine down and cause a loss of drive power (22V-865, code ZB7), remedied by reprogramming the hybrid control modules. Chrysler backs the powertrain with a PHEV engine-replacement warranty extension for misfire faults (program XC2) and issued an Engine Misfire Customer Satisfaction Notification (Chrysler code ZD2) and a Coolant Leak notification (code ZD8) touching these years. A mechanic recommends buying a 4xe only with an extended warranty. Confirm coverage and the recall by VIN.

Death wobble — the gas truck's front-end checkmoderate

On the standard gas Wrangler, the solid-axle death wobble is still the trait to test for, though it shows up less in the 2022 file than the peak years. A mechanic names worn ball joints as the most common cause, worse with oversized or unbalanced tires and lifts. There's no recall for the wobble itself. Test on a rough road and a highway ramp; any shimmy over bumps is a front-end inspection and a bargaining point.

Side-marker, gear-sensor, clutch, and software recallsmoderate

The gas-truck recall list is mostly free housekeeping: a side-marker-light tail-lamp harness recall (22V-326, code Z43); a manual-transmission gear-position-sensor recall where the rearview camera and reverse lights may fail in reverse (23V-641, code 92A); the manual clutch recall (23V-116 / code 19A); the frame-stud/fuel-tank recall (23V-191); a hybrid-control defrost recall (24V-111); the instrument-cluster short (24V-652); the camera/brake-light wiring recall (24V-676); and, later, the steering-pump-wiring fire recall (26V-363, park-outside). On diesels, a high-pressure-fuel-pump recall (22V-767, 23V-263). Verify the ones that apply.
