Reliability report · 2021 Jeep Wrangler · Updated July 2026

The loudest JL year and the first 4xe year — death wobble plus a plug-in-hybrid with a park-outside battery-fire recall, so the 4xe is the one to approach with a warranty.

The 2021 is the loudest JL year in our data (865 complaints) and introduces the 4xe plug-in hybrid — which is where most of the drama concentrates. The 4xe's high-voltage battery can fail internally and cause a fire while parked or driving, so Chrysler tells owners to park outside and not charge until fixed (23V-787, later expanded to 24V-720 and 25V-741). A separate recall covers a communication loss that can shut the engine down (22V-865). A mechanic's advice on the 4xe is blunt: buy it only with an extended warranty, because you're likely to need it. Complaint counts here include four genuine 4xe filings on top of the 861 for the standard Wrangler; every 4xe complaint in the file is a battery-fire or engine-replacement story.

On the standard gas Wrangler, the familiar JL themes lead: death wobble on the solid front axle, an auxiliary-battery/start-stop drain that a buyer's-guide describes as a known dealer-notice issue, and the manual clutch recall. There's also a later steering-pump recall (26V-363) for wiring that can overheat and cause a fire even parked. Buy a gas 2021 with the front end tight and the recalls closed; approach a 4xe only with coverage and every battery recall confirmed.

Canary status

Squawking

What that means: 865 federal complaints and fifteen recalls — the busiest year of the JL generation. Two forces: the mature JL's death wobble and electronics (auxiliary-battery drains, instrument cluster), and the brand-new 4xe plug-in hybrid, which brings a park-outside high-voltage-battery fire recall (23V-787, later expanded) and an engine-shutdown recall (22V-865). Most fixes are free, but the 4xe's issues are serious enough that a mechanic says to buy it only with extended coverage.

4xe high-voltage battery fire — park-outside recall (23V-787)

major
  • 4xe PHEV

The 4xe plug-in hybrid's defining risk. The high-voltage battery can fail internally and lead to a vehicle fire while parked or driving, so Chrysler advises owners to park outside and away from structures and not to charge the vehicle until it's repaired (23V-787, code 89A — later expanded by 24V-720 and superseded by 25V-741, code 68C). The remedy updates the battery software and replaces the battery pack as needed, free. On any 4xe, this is the recall to see fully closed in its newest form; an open one means you literally shouldn't garage the truck.

4xe engine shutdown and battery-replacement programmajor

  • 4xe PHEV

Beyond the fire recall, the 4xe has a recall for a loss of communication that can shut the engine down, causing a loss of drive power (22V-865, code ZB7); the fix reprograms the hybrid control modules so a fault limps home instead of shutting off. There's also a PHEV Battery Replacement Customer Support Program (a quiet extended-coverage program, Chrysler code Z27) and a later PHEV engine-replacement warranty extension (program XC2) for misfire faults. A mechanic sums up the hybrid hardware as 'a complete train wreck' and recommends an extended warranty. Treat a 4xe as a warranty-covered-or-walk-away buy.

Death wobble — the mature JL's leading complaintmajor

On the standard Wrangler, the solid-axle death wobble is still the top complaint theme. A mechanic names worn ball joints as the most common cause, worse with oversized or unbalanced tires and lifts, and any slop in the track bar or steering links. There is no safety recall for the wobble itself — the steering-damper programs (XF1 warranty extension, V41 notification) covered the earlier years and, per the mechanic, are 'a band-aid.' Test for it on a rough road and a highway ramp; any shimmy is a front-end inspection.

Auxiliary battery, steering-pump fire, and clutch recallsmoderate

Several more items on the gas trucks: a start-stop auxiliary battery that goes flat and throws false warnings — a buyer's-guide notes Jeep has a dealer notice on it (fault code P00FD), and there's an Intermittent Starts Customer Support Program (Chrysler code Y28). A later recall covers electric hydraulic power-steering-pump wiring that can overheat and cause a fire even with the ignition off, with a park-outside advisory (26V-363, code 21D). Plus the manual-transmission clutch recall chain (23V-116 / code 19A, with a re-remedy 24V-572), a seat-belt-pretensioner recall (22V-766), the instrument-cluster short (24V-652), and the camera/brake-light wiring recall (24V-676). Verify the ones that apply.

If you see a 4xe badge, that means it is time to head for the hills — the whole hybrid part of the powertrain is just a complete train wreck.
