Reliability report · 2019 Jeep Wrangler · Updated July 2026

The first full JL year — the launch-year weld recalls carry over and death wobble is the headline, so buy one with the steering recalls done and the front end tight.

The 2019 is the first year the JL stood alone, and at 721 complaints it's much quieter than the 1,789-count changeover year — but the steering story is front and center. Death wobble, the violent front-end shake over bumps at speed, is the most-cited theme, and a mechanic notes the JL draws the most of these complaints simply because it's been around and worked. On top of that sit two steering recalls: the carryover front track-bar bracket weld recall (18V-675), and a steering-column stub-shaft recall unique to 2019 where the shaft can break and let the steering wheel detach (19V-201).

The rest is lighter: a front seat-belt-retractor recall (20V-580), the rearview-camera software recall (20V-191), and the manual-transmission clutch recall chain (23V-116, replacing 21V-028). Buy a 2019 whose steering recalls show completed and whose front end is tight on a bump-road test drive; the 3.6L and 2.0T are both reasonably durable if the maintenance is there.

Canary status

Squawking

What that means: 721 federal complaints and nine recalls in the first full year of the fifth-generation (JL). The dominant themes are steering: death wobble, plus a carryover frame track-bar weld recall (18V-675) and a steering-column stub-shaft recall that can let the wheel detach (19V-201). The engine and electronics issues are lighter than 2018's, but the steering items are the ones with teeth — confirm them before buying.

Death wobble — the JL's most-cited complaint

major

The solid-front-axle shake is the leading theme in the 2019 file. A mechanic who diagnoses it explains that the JL draws the most death-wobble complaints because it's been on the road longest, and names the causes plainly: worn ball joints most often, worsened by out-of-balance or oversized tires, lifts, and slop in the track bar or steering links. There is no safety recall for the wobble itself — Chrysler's steering-damper warranty extension for 2018-2020 (program XF1) and the damper Customer Satisfaction Notification (program V41) are, in the mechanic's words, 'a band-aid.' Test for it on a rough road and a highway ramp; any shimmy is a front-end inspection and a bargaining point.

Steering-column stub-shaft recall — 19V-201major

A 2019-specific recall: some steering-column stub shafts were improperly machined and may break, which can let the steering wheel detach from the column — a clear path to losing control (19V-201, Chrysler code V29). The remedy is a free steering-column inspection and replacement as needed. This one is not optional to verify; confirm 19V-201 shows completed by VIN before you buy.

Frame track-bar weld recall carries over — 18V-675major

The JL launch-year frame recall reaches 2019: the front track-bar bracket welds may separate from the frame, reducing steering capability (18V-675, code UA5). The fix is a free weld inspection and repair. Together with the stub-shaft recall, it means a 2019 Wrangler has two steering-related recalls to close — both go to whether the truck steers reliably, so verify both.

Seat-belt, camera, and manual-clutch recallsmoderate

Three more free recalls: a front seat-belt retractor that may not properly slow an occupant after locking (20V-580, code W67); the rearview-camera software that can leave the image displayed after leaving reverse, an FMVSS rear-visibility non-compliance (20V-191); and, on manual-transmission trucks, the clutch pressure plate that can overheat and fracture (21V-028, superseded by 23V-116 / code 19A, which replaces the clutch). Verify each by VIN — the clutch one needs the newest remedy even if an earlier one was performed.

There have been a lot of complaints about death wobble, especially on the JLs, because they've been around longer.
