Reliability report · 2016 Hyundai Tucson · Updated July 2026

The engine story is real — buy only one with the bearing coverage and every recall documented.

2016 is the first year of the third-generation Tucson and the most-complained-about year we track for the model — 1,611 federal complaints, the file dominated by engine failures: knocking, oil consumption, stalls, and seizures tied to connecting-rod-bearing wear on the GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines.

The redeeming fact is coverage. Hyundai's Knock Sensor Detection System campaign (Service Campaign 966) watches for the early bearing symptoms, and the company extended the engine long-block warranty for rod-bearing damage in stages, ultimately to a Limited Lifetime Warranty valid for later owners. A 2016 with that work documented is a different car from one without.

Squawking

What that means: Launch year of the third generation and the loudest Tucson year in our data: 1,611 federal complaints, overwhelmingly engine. The Theta-era connecting-rod-bearing problem drives it, but Hyundai extended the engine coverage in stages up to a lifetime warranty — so this is an avoidable buy, not a walk-away, if the paperwork is there.

Connecting-rod-bearing engine wear — knock, seizure, and the coverage that saves it

major

The defining 2016 complaint: engine oil consumption that creeps up, then ticking and knocking, then a sudden loss of power or an outright seizure — sometimes with fire. Hyundai's federal manufacturer file names it directly and ties it to a campaign. Two things to understand. First, Service Campaign 966 installs a Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) — software that continuously listens for the bearing-wear vibration signature, blinks the malfunction light, and drops the engine into a protection mode before it destroys itself; if the follow-up inspection (diagnostic code P1326) fails, the fix is an engine long-block replacement. Second, Hyundai extended the warranty for that specific rod-bearing engine repair in stages — 10 years/120,000 miles, then 15 years/150,000 miles, and ultimately a Limited Lifetime Warranty valid for original and subsequent owners. Confirm the exact tier that applies to the VIN with Hyundai. On any 2016, cold-start the car yourself, listen for a deep knock, pull the dipstick, and demand proof that KSDS and any bearing inspection were done.

ABS module corrosion → engine-compartment fire (recall 20V543)major

A separate fire path from the bearing story. The anti-lock brake control unit (HECU) can corrode internally and short, which can start an engine-compartment fire whether parked or driving. Recall 20V543 originally covered 2019–2021 Tucsons, then expanded in December 2020 to add 2016–2018 — so the 2016 is in scope. The remedy is a free HECU fuse, and Hyundai advised owners to park outside and away from structures until it's done. This one is non-negotiable: verify by VIN that 20V543 shows completed.

7-speed dual-clutch transmission: low-speed shudder and a no-move recall (1.6T)moderate

Turbocharged 1.6T trims use a 7-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission (DCT) — a gearbox that behaves like a manual internally and can shudder or hesitate at low speed. Recall 16V628 addressed a condition where high temperatures and repeated pedal inputs could leave the car unable to move; the fix is a transmission control module (TCM) software update, and Hyundai ran further ECM/TCM reflashes for shift quality. On a test drive, creep in traffic and watch for a jerky, hesitant take-off; a car that lurches after the software is done is a walk-away.

Tow-hitch harness and hood-latch recallsmoderate

Two smaller 2016 recalls involve an accessory trailer-hitch wiring harness: 16V147 (trailer turn signals don't flash correctly) and 16V842 (trailer brake lights stay on). A third, 16V348, replaces a secondary hood latch that might not hold the hood if the primary latch releases. All are free fixes — confirm they're closed by VIN, especially on a car that was ever set up to tow.

Panoramic sunroof glass — extended coverage worth knowingminor

Hyundai extended the warranty on the panoramic sunroof's moving glass to 10 years/120,000 miles, valid for original and subsequent owners, on this era of Tucson. It's a quiet program rather than a recall, but if the glass ever cracks or the panel misbehaves, ask the dealer about that coverage before paying out of pocket.

While driving, the vehicle experienced a sudden and severe loss of motive power accompanied by a loud, catastrophic internal knocking sound from the engine compartment.
