Reliability report · 2019 Honda CR-V · Updated July 2026

A sensible choice — but the VIN check is non-negotiable here.

By 2019 Honda had largely tamed the oil-dilution problem that plagued 2017–18, but this year carries the most recalls of any CR-V we cover (8), and steering is now the top complaint category.

Buy one with a clean recall history and it's a sensible choice — but the VIN check is non-negotiable here.

Sticky / heavy steering

major

Steering leads recent federal filings: momentary resistance or notchiness turning off-center, especially at highway speed. Honda addressed similar symptoms on later models with bulletins and, for 2023+, a recall — for the 2019 there is no recall, so a dealer diagnosis can cost $150+ and a gearbox repair $1,000+ out of warranty. The highway test drive is your protection.

Fuel system / fuel pumpmoderate

Fuel pump failure (stalling risk) is covered by recalls 21V-215/23V-858, plus a 2019-specific fuel tank weld defect (19V-569 — tank replaced free). Fuel/propulsion is the #2 complaint category, so these campaigns map to a real pattern. Verify both by VIN.

Emergency braking false alarmsmoderate

Phantom braking from the Honda Sensing suite remains a top complaint component this year. Include highway driver-assist behavior in the test drive.

12V battery drainmoderate

The 2019 is a known battery-drain year — the subject of class-action attention. Repeated dead batteries, often traced to software or parasitic drain: $150–$400 per battery if unresolved. Two or more batteries in three years is the tell; ask for replacement history.

Oil dilution (1.5T)minor

The 1.5L turbo's early-generation problem — gasoline seeping into the engine oil, thinning it and raising the level, worst on cold-climate short trips — is much improved for 2019 after Honda's software updates, but affected cars still appear. The 30-second check: pull the dipstick and look for oil above the full mark or a gasoline smell, and ask about oil-change frequency.

Eight recalls means an unremediated car is multiple dealer visits before it's safe paperwork.
