Reliability report · 2022 GMC Yukon · Updated July 2026

Quieter than the launch year but the engine problem hardens — and this build gets a second GM programme whose remedy is a new engine.

The second year of the new body is a better truck than the first — 164 complaints against 295, and five campaigns against thirteen. Most of the launch chaos is behind it. What is left is the part that matters most: the engine. Recall 25V274 covers the 6.2L's connecting rods and crankshaft across 2021 to 2024, with a ten-year, 150,000-mile special coverage behind it. On top of that, this specific build carries GM Customer Satisfaction Program 10212963, which covers 6.2L engines whose "inner main bearing cap bolts were not torqued properly" and where the remedy is simply to replace the engine. Those are two different defects, two different documents, and one engine.

The transmission news is better. Recall 26V085 covers 2022 trucks with the ten-speed and ETRS — Electronic Transmission Range Select — whose control valve can fail and lock the rear wheels; the fix is free software, VINs became searchable in February 2026, and owner letters went out in April. Behind it sits GM's fifteen-year, 150,000-mile special coverage for the valve body itself. There is also a diesel-only fuel-tank recall specific to this year, and a set of semiconductor-shortage retrofits that mean a 2022 can be missing heated seats, a heated steering wheel or park assist that its original invoice listed. Ask for the window sticker. Same truck under the skin — see the 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe report.

Canary status

Squawking

What that means: 164 federal complaints, well down from the 2021's 295, and five recalls. The improvement is real but narrow: the launch-year seat-belt and software campaigns are gone, and what remains is concentrated on the engine and the transmission. This model year carries recall 25V274 for the 6.2L, plus a second and entirely separate GM programme for main bearing cap bolts that were not torqued properly, whose remedy is also to replace the engine. Squawking because two independent engine-replacement programmes on one build is a pattern, not bad luck — though both are free, and the coverage behind them is long.

Two separate 6.2L engine-replacement programmes on one build

major
  • 6.2L V8

The first is recall 25V274: connecting rods and crankshafts with manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and failure, across 2021–2024 trucks with the 6.2L V8. Dealers inspect and repair or replace the engine free; a truck that passes gets higher-viscosity oil, a new fill cap, a new filter and a manual update, and GM's field-action bulletin makes the oil change permanent — from 0W20 to 0W40 for the life of the engine. Behind it sits a Special Coverage of ten years or 150,000 miles from first service, regardless of ownership. The second is unrelated and specific to this build: GM Customer Satisfaction Program 10212963 covers 6.2L (RPO L87) engines where "the inner main bearing cap bolts were not torqued properly," putting the engine at "increased risk of experiencing low engine oil pressure with warning, potentially causing engine damage." GM's remedy sentence is four words long: "Dealers are to replace the engine." Check the VIN against both.

Ten-speed control valve can lock the rear wheelsmajor

Recall 26V085 covers 2022 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL, Escalade and Escalade ESV vehicles "equipped with 10 Speed Transmission with ETRS (Electronic Transmission Range Select)" where "the transmission control valve may fail and lock up the rear wheels." Dealers install new transmission control module software free. VINs became searchable on NHTSA on 12 February 2026 and owner letters were mailed on 7 April 2026, so this is a recent campaign and completion on a used truck is unlikely. Separately and more valuably, GM's Special Coverage for control-valve wear runs fifteen years or 150,000 miles from first service and pays for a new valve body outright — the symptoms it lists are harsh shifting, a service-engine-soon message, reduced performance and diagnostic code P0747. Drive for shudder and harsh shifts, and ask whether the valve body has been done.

Diesel fuel tank may be the wrong tankmajor

  • 3.0L Duramax diesel

Recall 25V619 is unusual and specific: it covers certain 2021 Escalade, 2021 and 2023–2024 Tahoe, and 2022 and 2024 Yukon vehicles with the six-cylinder diesel where "the original fuel tank may have been replaced with an incorrect fuel tank, which can allow fuel to leak in a rollover crash." Dealers inspect for the correct tank and replace it if necessary, free. Because the defect was introduced by a service replacement rather than at the factory, it does not follow a clean build range — which is exactly why it needs checking by VIN rather than by reasoning about the model year. Owner letters were mailed 5 November 2025 and VINs became searchable on 18 September 2025. It applies only to diesel trucks.

DFM lifter failure on the 5.3L, with nothing behind itmajor

  • 5.3L V8

The 6.2L gets a recall and two coverage programmes. The 5.3L gets neither. DFM — Dynamic Fuel Management, which can shut down any combination of the eight cylinders — uses collapsible lifters that stick or collapse, and a failed one scars the camshaft, so the repair is lifters plus a cam. Mechanics report it failing more often and earlier than the older AFM system it replaced, and there is no recall and no special coverage covering the 5.3L on this model year. The only GM programme in this family that pays for an engine reaches the 2023 build. Cold-start it, listen for a tick before the engine warms, and treat any hesitation as the engine switches between cylinder counts as a reason to look harder.

The semiconductor shortage hit this build directly, and GM's own words are unambiguous: "Due to the industry-wide semiconductor shortage, the front heated/ventilated seats, front heated seats, or rear heated seats are not functional on certain 2022-2023 model year vehicles listed above, built beginning November 15, 2021. The affected vehicle owners should have been made aware of the condition at sale, and notified that once parts are available, they would be eligible for a no additional cost retrofit." Separate programmes cover the heated steering wheel on builds from 17 November 2021 and park assist on builds from 2 December 2021. A used buyer three owners downstream may never have been told. Compare the window sticker against what actually works, and if something is missing, the retrofit is free.

Coolant control valve and a battery that drains after an updatemoderate

Two GM programmes cover small faults with irritating symptoms. The engine coolant control valve can fail an on-board diagnostic test, lighting the check-engine lamp and setting a code, and "in some cases, the engine cooling fans may run after the engine is switched off" — the valve is replaced at no charge on 2021 through 2023 trucks. Separately, several satisfaction programmes cover a battery that "is at risk for a drain following an over-the-air update," fixed by reprogramming the serial data gateway module and the radio; one of them adds that a "Download Paused" message may appear on the radio display, and that dealers will charge and test the battery and replace it if it fails. If the truck has been sitting on a lot with a flat battery, this is the first thing to ask about.

Trailer brake switch, and air suspension that leaks in the coldmoderate

Two towing-and-suspension items with documents behind them. GM's Customer Satisfaction Program N222384930 covers a "Service Trailer Brake message set when a trailer with electric brakes is connected and the driver attempts to use the manual apply slider on switch or depress the brake pedal while towing" — code C159C, remedied by replacing the trailer brake control switch. On air-suspension trucks, a GM bulletin describes "the air levelling suspension losing air pressure in very cold temperatures while sitting for several hours," with dealers replacing both front air springs; another covers a pinched air inlet hose to the compressor setting code C1197. Two mechanic teardowns give the pattern that costs most: a leaking spring makes the compressor run constantly until it fails too. Test the trailer brake controller, and park the truck overnight in the cold if you can.

Certain vehicles, equipped with a 6.2L gasoline engine (RPO L87), may have a condition in which the inner main bearing cap bolts were not torqued properly. Dealers are to replace the engine.
