The quietest-looking year in the band and the worst engine file in it — a 6.2L that fails like the recalled trucks but sits one year outside the recall.

Complaint counts are a measure of how many people complained, not of how much it cost them. The 2019 Yukon is the clearest example of that gap in this whole model's history. Fifty-four complaints is the second-lowest total across the eight years, and the file behind them reads like a catalogue of engine destruction. Four of eight lifters gone at 53,000 miles on a properly serviced truck with 44% oil life remaining and no warning light of any kind. Massive lifter failure and camshaft damage at 94,659 miles with an $8,596.80 estimate itemised down to the head bolts. An engine seized at 72,000. One owner filed a formal memorandum with NHTSA after two separate highway-speed engine failures in twelve months on the same truck, both valve-train, both on the same side of the engine, once with his wife driving and once with his son.

What makes 2019 specifically dangerous to a buyer is the calendar. GM's recall 25V274 covers exactly this failure — connecting rods, crankshafts and the L87 6.2L — on 2021 through 2024 trucks, with a ten-year, 150,000-mile special coverage behind it. The lifter-bore engine-replacement programme covers the 2023 build. Neither reaches back to 2019. Owner after owner in this file makes the same discovery: "they said there was a recall but it was for the exact same symptoms that was diagnosed here but only starting with year 2021." If you are buying a 2019, buy the 5.3L or buy a documented engine. The 6.2L on this model year is a bet with no house money behind it. What that means: Only 54 federal complaints and two recalls, which on volume alone would make this one of the safest years we cover. Read the complaints and it inverts. This file is dominated by 6.2L lifter and camshaft destruction with the repair bills attached: $14,435 out of pocket for a new engine, an itemised $8,596 estimate, a $6,450 rebuild, quotes of $15,000 and $15,865. Failures start at 53,000 miles and arrive with no warning light. Every GM engine programme that would pay for this begins at model year 2021, and owners say so themselves, repeatedly. 6.2L lifter and camshaft failure — the year's defining problem, with no coverage

This dominates the file and the reports are unusually detailed. "Return Results were massive lifter failure and cam shaft damage. Why would the check engine light not come on sooner to prevent TOTAL FAILURE" — the estimate ran to $8,596.80, itemised down to the camshaft, eight push rods, four and four valve lifters, the lifter guides and the head bolt set. Another owner: "Inspected camshaft and found damage from failed lifter. I had to get a new engine and pay out of pocket $14,435.44." A third: "Four of the eight oil lifters in my 6.2L engine failed. The car has around 53,000 miles … There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the issue. Zero." A fourth was quoted "$3,800 + Tax" for lifters and "$15,865" for the engine. Failure mileages across the file run 53,000, 72,000, 73,000, 76,300 and 94,659. GM's engine recall and its ten-year coverage start at model year 2021 and do not reach this truck.

It fails at highway speed, twice, on the same truckmajor

The safety case is not theoretical. One owner submitted a memorandum to NHTSA about his 6.2L: "In the past twelve months, I have experienced two separate engine failures, both occurring at highway speeds and both involving valve-train failures on the same side of the engine. In each incident, the vehicle suddenly lost power, misfired violently, and became unable to maintain speed … One failure occurred while my wife was driving; the other occurred while my son was driving. Both were forced to maneuver across high-speed traffic with a failing engine to reach the shoulder." Another lost the engine on an interstate at 1 a.m. and got a phone notification reading "battery critically low" as the truck died. A third: "my oil pressure gauge dropped to zero and RPMs went to zero and I had to pull over in full on traffic going 70mph with my boat hooked to my 2019 gmc yukon." The common thread in every one is that no warning preceded it.

Transmissions fail out of warranty, at real moneymajor

The second cluster is the gearbox and it is uncovered too. A 6L80 went "from initial minor slipping to a severe loss of vehicle propulsion" inside two weeks, needing "a complete out-of-pocket replacement of the transmission unit at 116,374 miles." Another owner found "metal shavings in the oil" at 125,870 with the warranty expired and the truck not repaired. A third had the torque converter fail at 89,000 highway miles with "no warnings, no towing, no heavy loads or abuse" and had to replace the transmission, "not covered under warranty due to mileage." A fourth was stranded mid-intersection at 90,100 miles: "it was like it was in neutral no matter how much I tried to accelerate." Ask for transmission service records and drive it long enough to feel a shift from cold.

Power steering assist can be lost — and GM's fix is a programme you have to ask formajor

GM's Customer Satisfaction Program N182190820 covers 2018 and 2019 trucks where "the power steering belt may slip due to tooth wear-out or poor belt tooth-to-gear tooth fit. Power steering assist may be reduced or lost intermittently, if early warning signs are ignored," with dealers replacing the steering gear assembly. This year's file shows what ignoring it looks like: "2019 GMC Yukon Denali. 6,408 miles. Driving down the highway at normal speed a warning appears that says service power steering. Immediately lost power steering on the vehicle and by the time we got it to the off ramp the steering was completely locked in the straight position." Another reports "power steering going in and out while driving." Because it is a satisfaction programme rather than a recall it was never mailed like one — ask the dealer to check the VIN against it by name.

Fuel rail wiring bracket — loss of propulsion, and a remote chance of firemajor

A 2019-specific GM Customer Satisfaction Program covers trucks with "an incomplete or missing braze between the harness bulkhead support bracket and the fuel rail assembly. If the braze is incomplete the support bracket may detach from the fuel rail assembly over time. Wiring may sever and compromise the function of the fuel pump and/or the 4 passenger side injectors." GM's own consequence line is unusually direct: "Loss of propulsion is possible, and there is a remote chance of fire if there is a fuel leak." The remedy is to replace the fuel rail assembly. This is the most serious 2019-only document GM wrote for this truck and it is not a recall, so nobody was compelled to tell an owner about it. Ask for it by VIN.

Transfer case lock-up — a 2026 PARK IT recall reaching back to this yearmajor

Recall 26V289 landed in May 2026 and reaches back to 2015–2020 Yukon, Yukon XL, Suburban, Tahoe and Escalade vehicles with four-wheel or all-wheel drive. "A component missing from the drivetrain transfer case may cause the front and/or rear wheels to lock up without warning to the driver," and GM's advice is blunt: owners should not drive the vehicle until the remedy is complete. Dealers inspect and if necessary replace the transfer case assembly, free. The affected population is tiny — 66 vehicles across every year and nameplate combined — but the consequence is severe and the campaign is very recent, so completion rates on used trucks will be low. Owner letters were mailed 18 May 2026 and VINs became searchable on 7 May 2026.

Service Trailer Brake message that will not go awayminor

A recurring nuisance in this year's file, and worth knowing about because it is genuinely hard to clear. One owner: "I just purchased this 2019 GMC Yukon. About 3 weeks after, the message 'Service Trailer Brake System' started beeping … now it is constantly doing it every few days. Can't seem to get it to stop." Another: "we have never used the wiring or towed anything, and the trailer brake system is unused. The beeping is near constant, even after we dismiss the alert and is very distracting when driving." A third, at 13,000 miles, was told there was no trailer brake at all. GM later released an updated trailer brake control switch under a satisfaction programme, but that programme covers 2022 and 2023 trucks, not this one. If the message appears on a test drive, price the switch before you buy.
