Reliability report · 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty · Updated July 2026

The lowest-complaint Super Duty year — the final, most-sorted year of the aluminum generation.

The 2022 has the lowest federal complaint count of any F-250 year in our data (116) — the payoff of six years of running changes on the aluminum generation.

Its 17-campaign recall list is longer on paper mostly because of shared, fleet-wide software and camera fixes. Confirm the diesel CP4 fuel-pump recall and the trailer-brake campaigns, run the standard checks, and this is a strong buy.

Canary status

Chirping

What that means: The last year of the 2017-generation body before the 2023 refresh, and the quietest by complaint volume (116). The recall count looks high (17) but is inflated by shared multi-model campaigns and later software fixes — the underlying truck is the most-settled version. Verify the diesel and trailer-brake recalls and buy with confidence.

6.7L diesel CP4 high-pressure fuel pump (final year of the recall scope)

major
  • 6.7L Power Stroke diesel

2022 is the last model year in the CP4 fuel-pump recall's scope. 24V-957 (Ford 24S78) covers biodiesel-deposit CP4 failure on 2020–2022 diesels with a software remedy, and re-repair 26V-158 (26S17) covers first-fixes done wrong. The underlying CP4 risk is unchanged: if the pump makes metal, it contaminates the whole high-pressure fuel system — pump, injectors, lines, conditioning module — for a roughly $10,000 replacement (mechanic-quoted). Contaminated fuel, missed filter services, and misfueling are the triggers. Confirm the recall remedied and inspect the lower fuel filter for metal.

This is a 6.7L Power Stroke diesel problem. The 6.2L gas V8 and 7.3L Godzilla gas V8 don’t share it.

Trailer-brake and airbag recallsmajor

Two safety campaigns stand out for a work truck. The integrated trailer brake control has two related campaigns — 22V-193 (Ford 22S17) and its re-repair 25V-132 (25S18), plus the later 26V-104 (26C10) — where a software error can leave a towed trailer's electric brakes not braking. And two airbag campaigns: 21V-805 (21C26) on a front-door side-impact sensor that can disable the side airbags, and 21V-923 (21S49) where the driver-airbag cover may fragment. If you tow, confirming the trailer-brake fixes is essential.

7.3L Godzilla gas V8moderate

  • 7.3L Godzilla gas V8

The gas 2022 has the 7.3L Godzilla — the strong, simple pushrod V8 mechanics point to for towing, with no turbo or variable valve timing to fail. Long-term, watch spark plugs seizing in the aluminum heads and typical era oil leaks. Ask for spark-plug service history and check for leaks; this remains the reassuring engine choice.

Front-axle death wobblemoderate

The solid-front-axle wobble is inherent to the Super Duty. A worn track bar, ball joints, or tie rods can start a violent oscillation at highway speed over bumps; a steering damper alone only masks it. On a low-mileage 2022 the front end should still be tight — test-drive over rough pavement above 50 mph and confirm no shake, and check the components for early play.
