Reliability report · 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty · Updated July 2026

The aluminum-redesign launch year — the most recall-heavy Super Duty, and a check-everything buy.

2017 is the redesign: the Super Duty switched to an aluminum body and a new cab. First-year-of-a-generation trucks carry teething problems, and the recall record proves it — fifteen campaigns, several of them fire or rollaway risks.

The good news is every one is a free fix and most are already remedied on well-kept trucks. The bad news is a neglected 2017 can have several still open. Verify the VIN, then apply the same diesel-and-front-end checks as every Super Duty year.

Squawking

What that means: First year of the new aluminum-body generation, and it shows: the longest recall sheet of any F-250 year we cover (15 campaigns), spanning fuel-system fire risks, rollaway, door latches, and seat-belt welds. All are free fixes — but this is the year to arrive with the full VIN printout in hand.

major

The redesign year's recall list is long and serious. Prioritize the safety-critical ones: 17V-225 (Ford 17C06) on 6.2L gas trucks — a damaged park-rod actuating plate can let the truck move even in Park (rollaway); 16V-778 (16S39) — a diesel fuel-conditioning-module shield can dislodge and open a drain valve, leaking fuel; 16V-945 (16S45) — a front fuel-tank strap bracket can let the tank drop; 17V-652 (17S33) — door latches can freeze or the cable kink so doors open while driving; and 19V-880 (19S52) — seat-belt-pretensioner sparks can ignite B-pillar carpet in a crash. There are also two driveshaft campaigns (22V-087 gas, 22V-880 4x4) and seat/belt-weld recalls (17V-332, 17V-526, 17V-599). Every one is free; the risk is how many are still open on a given truck.

6.7L Power Stroke CP4 high-pressure fuel pumpmajor

  • 6.7L Power Stroke diesel

The Super Duty's signature diesel failure carries into the new generation. The Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump can run dry and make metal, which then contaminates the whole high-pressure system — pump, injectors, lines, and the fuel conditioning module — turning a pump failure into a roughly $10,000 full-fuel-system job (mechanic-quoted). Contaminated fuel, missed filter services, and misfueling (gasoline or DEF in the diesel tank) are the triggers. Pull the lower fuel filter and look for metal glitter before you buy, and ask for fuel-filter service records.

Front-axle death wobble (steering damper CSP applies)major

2017 opens the window for Ford's death-wobble response. A Technical Service Bulletin (TSB 18-2268 — the fix instructions Ford sends dealers) documents 'sustained steering wheel oscillation after hitting rough pavement or an expansion joint above 45 mph' on 2017–2019 F-250/F-350 4WD trucks and calls for a steering-linkage-damper replacement; it later became a Customer Satisfaction Program (a CSP — Ford's quiet goodwill coverage) with owner letters and mobile service. Note this is a TSB/CSP, not a safety recall. Mechanics warn the damper alone is a band-aid: the real fix is usually a worn track bar, ball joints, or tie rods. Test-drive over rough pavement above 50 mph.

6.2L Boss gas V8: the misfire jobmoderate

  • 6.2L gas V8

The gas engine is the 6.2L Boss V8, with 16 plugs and 8 coils. A Ford tech in our sources calls its common failure 'the $3,500 misfire job' (coils, plugs, intake-manifold runners, occasional broken valve spring) and rates the engine two out of ten, advising buyers to step up to the diesel or the later 7.3 if the budget allows. It tows fine and is simple, but ignition work is pricey. Note it also shares the 17V-225 park-rod rollaway recall — a gas-only campaign.
