Reliability report · 2023 Chrysler Pacifica · Updated July 2026

183 complaints but fourteen recalls, the most of any Pacifica year. And the plug-in hybrid complaints are alarming for how early they arrive: owners reporting the van shutting off on the motorway at 500, 778 and 2,037 miles.

The 2023 looks quiet on complaint volume, 143 against the petrol van and 40 against the plug-in hybrid for 183 in total, and it is not. It carries fourteen recall campaigns, more than any other model year of this van, and four of them arrived in 2025 and 2026, which means a used 2023 bought today has a real chance of carrying open work.

The plug-in hybrid file is the part that should give a buyer pause, not because it is large but because of the mileages in it. Owners report the van losing drive on motorways with warning messages reading 'Stop Safely Vehicle Will Shut Off Soon' at failure mileages of 500, 778, 1,000, 1,500, 2,037 and 2,301. One owner bought new in March 2024, had the failure in April at 2,301 miles, again three days later at 2,559, then again at 3,933 after which 'STAR advised and approved replacing the transmission', and again at 5,012 miles out of state. His summary: 'I have no reason to believe that Chrysler can fix the problem.' Another new van needed 'a NEW transmission' at 17,000 miles. Another at 2,037 miles: 'My car had only 2,037 miles on it when this occurred and already needs a new transmission.'

The recall that speaks to it is 23V-010, the internal transmission wiring connector short, which covers 2017 to 2023 plug-in hybrids and whose remedy is software that turns a shutdown into a limp home rather than repairing the connector. The repair itself sits in Chrysler's warranty extensions XE1 and XN1, which cover servicing and replacing the transmission respectively across the same 2017 to 2023 span. That is the good news buried in a grim file: Chrysler has been paying for these.

The petrol 2023 is a different and much better proposition, but it still has homework. 24V-199 covers a steering column control module that 'may not be welded properly, which can prevent the driver's air bag from deploying in a crash'. 26V-189, from March 2026, covers curtain airbags with 'insufficient pressure retention from improperly sealed seams' and explicitly states that vans already repaired under the earlier campaign 'will need to have the new remedy completed'. And three separate rearview camera recalls touch this single model year: 24V-436, 25V-388 and 26V-327.

Two of the fourteen campaigns are plug-in-hybrid-specific fire risks. 23V-500 covers a fuel line that 'may be deformed, causing a fuel leak'. 23V-753 covers an incorrectly installed 12-volt battery isolator post causing 'a fire while parked or driving', with owners advised 'to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete.'

Canary status

Squawking

What that means: The complaint total is low at 183, but that is partly because the 2023 has had the fewest years on the road. The recall count is the highest in the band at fourteen, including a fuel line that can leak, a 12-volt isolator post that can start a fire with a park-outside advisory, a steering column module that can stop the driver's airbag deploying, and three separate rearview camera campaigns. The plug-in hybrid's 40 complaints are dominated by near-new vans losing drive on the motorway, several of which were fixed by replacing the transmission before 20,000 miles.

Near-new plug-in hybrids losing drive on the motorway

major
  • 3.6L Pentastar PHEV

The defining problem of the 2023 plug-in hybrid, and the mileages are what make it serious rather than the volume. Recall 23V-010, Chrysler code 03A, covers 2017 to 2023 Pacifica plug-in hybrids where 'an internal transmission wiring connector may short circuit, resulting in an unexpected engine shutdown', which 'can cause a loss of drive power'. Owners of 2023 vans describe it happening almost immediately. One: 'I bought a new 2023 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid in March 2024. In April 2024, mileage 2,301… this warning message appeared: Stop Safely Vehicle Will Shut Off Soon… I had about 15-30 seconds to pull over and then the vehicle lost all power.' It recurred at 2,559 miles, then at 3,933 miles when 'STAR advised and approved replacing the transmission', then again at 5,012 miles. Another, at 2,037 miles: 'my 2023 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid told me stop safely vehicle will shut off soon and then it shut down in a matter of seconds… My car had only 2,037 miles on it when this occurred and already needs a new transmission.' Another at 17,000: the dealer 'said it needed a NEW transmission.' Another at 500 miles reported the same message plus 'a burning odor in the cabin'. Understand what the recall does: a mechanic explains that the software update 'will help your Chrysler avoid stalling in the middle of the road. Instead, the vehicle will go into limp mode and limit speed and power to let you safely park.' It manages the failure. The repair is covered by warranty extensions XE1, which states 'this bulletin involves servicing the transmission', and XN1, which states 'this bulletin involves replacing the transmission', both spanning 2017 to 2023 and both triggered by fault codes P0A3F, P0A43, P0A45 or P0C1A. Neither publishes a mileage or year cap, so check the VIN against both with a dealer before you buy.

Two plug-in hybrid fire recalls specific to 2023major

  • 3.6L Pentastar PHEV

Both apply only to the plug-in hybrid and both are unique to this model year. Recall 23V-500, Chrysler code 77A, covers 2023 Pacifica plug-in hybrids where 'the fuel line may be deformed, causing a fuel leak', with the consequence that 'a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.' Dealers inspect and replace the fuel line as necessary, free, and owner letters were mailed on 31 August 2023. Recall 23V-753, Chrysler code B0A, covers 2023 plug-in hybrids where 'an electrical short may occur due to an incorrectly installed 12-volt battery isolator post, resulting in a fire while parked or driving.' That one carries a park-outside advisory of its own: 'Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete.' Dealers correct the isolator to fit the anti-rotation stud, free, with letters mailed 28 November 2023. Note that this is the same component that produced the 2017 to 2020 campaign 20V-334, reappearing on the newest model year for a different reason, this time an assembly error rather than a resistance problem. Both are free, both are quick, and both are absolutely worth confirming closed before you buy.

Steering column module recall 24V-199, driver's airbag may not deploymajor

A broad Stellantis campaign that includes the 2023 Pacifica. Recall 24V-199, Chrysler codes 14B, 33B, 34B, 35B and 36B, covers 2023 and 2024 Ram, Jeep and Chrysler models including the Pacifica and Voyager, where 'the steering column control module may not be welded properly, which can prevent the driver's air bag from deploying in a crash.' That failure puts the van outside Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 on occupant crash protection, and the consequence line is as plain as they come: 'An air bag that does not deploy in a crash can increase the risk of injury.' Dealers inspect and replace the steering column control module as necessary, free. Some owner notification letters were mailed between 11 April and 20 June 2024, which is a wide and staggered window and exactly the kind of schedule that leaves gaps. There is nothing you can test for this on a drive; the airbag warning light illuminating normally at startup tells you nothing about the weld. This one is resolved by VIN check and nothing else.

The curtain airbag recall that overrides an earlier repairmajor

The trap on a 2023, because it can defeat a service history that looks complete. Three campaigns have touched this van's side curtain airbags. 24V-793, Chrysler code A8B, covered 2020 to 2023 Pacificas for an 'improperly secured connector for the side curtain air bags' that 'may prevent the air bags from deploying', and Chrysler records all vehicles as remedied on it. 25V-302, Chrysler codes 06C, 54C and 55C, then covered 2022 to 2025 Pacificas and Voyagers for a different defect: 'the right and left side curtain air bags may have insufficient pressure retention from improperly sealed seams', failing Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 226 on ejection mitigation. Then on 26 March 2026 came 26V-189, Chrysler codes 06D, 10D and 11D, covering 2022 to 2026 Pacificas and Voyagers for the same seam problem, and its record contains the sentence that matters: 'This recall expands and replaces previous NHTSA recall numbers 25V302 and 25V573. Vehicles previously repaired under a prior recall will need to have the new remedy completed.' Owner letters were mailed on 14 May 2026. A 2023 whose paperwork shows the airbag recall done in 2025 still needs the 2026 work. Do not accept a dated repair order as the answer; run the VIN today and read what is currently open.

Three separate rearview camera recalls on one model yearmoderate

The 2023 is caught by three distinct camera campaigns, which is more than any other Pacifica year and worth checking as a set rather than individually. 24V-436, Chrysler codes 66B and 79B, covers 2021 to 2023 Pacificas among many Stellantis models where 'the radio software may prevent the rearview image from displaying'; the fix is a free software update at a dealer or over the air, and the 2021 and 2022 complaint files are full of owners who waited on parts for it. 25V-388, Chrysler code 34C, covers 2023 Pacifica and Voyager vans where 'due to a manufacturing error, the rearview camera image may not display', and here the remedy is physical: dealers 'inspect and replace the rearview camera, as necessary', free, with letters mailed 3 July 2025. 26V-327, Chrysler code 46D, covers 2019 and 2023 Pacificas where 'contamination in the central vision processing module or improper programming may cause the rearview camera image not to display', remedied by a module software update or module replacement, free, with letters expected from July 2026. All three fail Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 on rear visibility. The physical test covers all of them at once and takes half a minute: shift into reverse and back out several times, checking the image appears promptly, is not frozen or black, and clears when you shift out.

Second-row seat backs that will not stay lockedmoderate

The 2023 complaint file is where this failure is described most clearly, and it is not covered by anything. One owner identifies the part: 'Part number 68324912AC on both 2nd row seats has failed. The plastic housing encasing the spring broke on top for one seat, and on bottom for the other seat. Now the seat back does not lock in position. When the seat back tilts far enough forward, the seat slides freely forwards and backwards.' He adds that dealers had none available and that 'it is on back order due to the number of vehicles that have had this problem', and notes he was fortunate the parts broke while the seats were empty because otherwise occupants 'could have been injured just from normal braking, and would not have been safe in an accident.' A second owner reports that while driving 'with the granddaughter seated in the rear driver's seat, the seat unexpectedly fully reclined and slid back and forth' at around 18,000 miles. Be precise about the status of this. It is the subject of consumer litigation against Stellantis, and a lawsuit is not coverage: no recall and no published Chrysler warranty extension covers this failure, so no one is obliged to pay for it, and any settlement term you may read about elsewhere is not something we can confirm from a document. Note also that this is a different problem from recall 22V-181, which concerns the latch holding the seat to the floor on 2021 and 2022 vans. Test it physically: sit in each second-row seat and push back hard against the seat back, and confirm it locks solidly rather than tipping forward or sliding on its rails.

Two Chrysler customer satisfaction notifications touch the 2023. A customer satisfaction notification is a free fix for something that annoys owners but is not a safety defect, which means it is not a recall, no letter is mailed, and the work only happens if you ask a dealer to run the VIN. They are 47A, 'Serpentine Belt Squeal', covering 2022 and 2023, and 81A, 'Radio Features', covering 2021 to 2023. Both appear in the federal manufacturer-communications index as subject lines with no body text at all, so we are not going to describe what either changes or which vans qualify. What is worth doing is matching the titles to things you can check on the day: start the van from cold and listen for a belt squeal from the front of the engine, and spend a few minutes working through the infotainment system, the phone pairing and the radio presets to see whether anything is missing or misbehaving. If either matches, that is a free dealer visit rather than a negotiation point.

Wheelchair-conversion recalls, if and only if the van is convertedminor

Four of this model year's fourteen campaigns come from mobility converters rather than from Chrysler, and they apply only to vans that were modified for wheelchair access. They are listed here for completeness because they are genuine federal recalls returned against the 2023 Pacifica, and flagged clearly because they will not apply to a standard van. Rollx Vans campaign 25V-876 and Vantage Mobility campaign 25V-877 both concern QRT-Deluxe and QRT-Max wheelchair restraints where 'the retractors may not lock, preventing the wheelchair from being properly secured'. Braun Corporation campaign 26V-296 covers the same restraint issue on converted 2023 to 2026 Pacificas. Braun campaign 26V-358 is different and more serious: on converted 2023 to 2026 Pacificas and Voyagers, 'the spring inside the front seat harness connector may contact electrical terminals', and 'the unintended connection may prevent the air bags from deploying'. Dealers replace the spring, free, with letters mailed 16 July 2026. If the van in front of you has a lowered floor, a ramp, or any wheelchair securement hardware, these four move from footnotes to essential checks, and the converter rather than Chrysler is the party to contact.

The petrol van, and what it is actually likeminor

  • 3.6L Pentastar V6

Set aside the recall paperwork and the 2023 petrol Pacifica is a mature vehicle. Its 143 complaints are the lowest base-model figure in the band, the launch-era steering cluster has gone, and the mechanical hardware has a good reputation among people who work on it. The ZF 948TE nine-speed automatic, built by German supplier ZF rather than Chrysler and shared with the front-drive Jeep Cherokee and the Honda Odyssey, still shifts abruptly around 14 mph on many vans; a mechanic who investigated his own concluded 'the transmission is mechanically sound, it is not a mechanical problem with the transmission, it is simply a software control' and found 'no metal' in the fluid at 50,000 and 60,000 miles. The 3.6L Pentastar V6's known wear point is the oil filter housing, which mechanics also call the oil cooler, weeping at its joint with the block across the whole 2017 to 2023 run; on a van this young it is a look-for rather than an expect. An owner-mechanic's figures for it, when it does happen, are 'about 200' for the part, '558' for a dealer diagnostic, and 'more than a thousand dollars' for a dealer replacement out of warranty. The most useful long-range perspective we have comes from an owner who took a Pacifica of this generation to 200,000 miles and describes it as 'a maintenance-free vehicle other than routine crap', while noting the two things that did cost him money: an HID headlight ballast that 'died at 100,000 mi. That was a $300 problem', and a wheel bearing where 'the entire knuckle was replaced and it was like $200 used'. That is a reasonable picture of what a well-kept petrol Pacifica asks of you.
