Reliability report · 2020 Chrysler Pacifica · Updated July 2026

221 complaints and seven recalls, the quietest year in the Pacifica's run. The catch is that the plug-in hybrid is the only model year besides 2021 caught by two separate battery fire recalls at once.

The 2020 is the low point of the Pacifica's complaint curve. 163 filings against the petrol van and 58 against the plug-in hybrid gives 221 in total, against 1,563 for the 2017 and 1,050 for the 2018. Seven recall campaigns, one of which applies only to wheelchair-converted vans. The launch-era faults are gone: no steering cluster of any size, no transmission weld, no halfshaft, no control arm.

For the petrol van that is close to the whole story. Its campaigns are a rearview camera software update (20V-191), a curtain airbag connector that Chrysler records as already fixed across the fleet (24V-793), and the wheelchair-conversion campaign that will not apply to you. There is also a free customer satisfaction program, Y97, on hub bolts for 2020 and 2021 vans, which nobody will tell you about unless you ask.

The plug-in hybrid is where the caution lives, and it is a genuine one. The 2020 is caught by two overlapping battery fire recalls. 24V-538, Chrysler code 72B, covers 3,606 vehicles from 2019 to 2021 and says 'the battery pack may cause a vehicle fire when parked, even with the ignition in the Off position.' 26V-362, Chrysler code 52D, arrived in June 2026, covers 2020 to 2022, and says almost exactly the same thing in almost exactly the same words. Both instruct owners not to charge the van and to park it outside, away from structures. On top of those sits 20V-334, the 12-volt isolator post campaign, which carries its own instruction not to park inside buildings or near other vehicles.

Three separate fire-related campaigns on one model year of one powertrain is not a coincidence and should not be read as one. The 22V-077 campaign on the 2017 and 2018 vans was superseded because its remedy did not settle the problem, 24V-538 describes itself as 'an expansion' of it, and 26V-362 applies the same battery control module software fix a third time to a third set of years. If you are buying a 2020 plug-in hybrid, you are buying into that history, and the only sensible way to do it is with documentary proof that the most recent campaign has actually been completed on that VIN.

The petrol 2020, by contrast, is arguably the easiest Pacifica in the whole band to recommend. That divergence is the single most useful thing to know about this model year.

Canary status

Squawking

What that means: By the numbers the 2020 is the best year here: 221 federal complaints, the lowest total in the band, and seven recalls, also the lowest. The petrol van in particular has a short and unremarkable list. But the plug-in hybrid sits inside both surviving battery fire campaigns, 24V-538 covering 2019 to 2021 and 26V-362 covering 2020 to 2022, and both tell owners not to charge the van and to park it outside away from buildings. That combination is what holds the year at Squawking rather than something calmer. A petrol 2020 and a plug-in hybrid 2020 are, for buying purposes, two different propositions.

Two overlapping battery fire recalls on the plug-in hybrid, 24V-538 and 26V-362

  • 3.6L Pentastar PHEV

The reason a 2020 plug-in hybrid is not the easy buy its complaint count suggests. Two separate campaigns cover this model year's battery pack for the same failure. Recall 24V-538, Chrysler code 72B, covers 3,606 vehicles across 2019 to 2021: 'The battery pack may cause a vehicle fire when parked, even with the ignition in the Off position.' Recall 26V-362, Chrysler code 52D, reported to NHTSA on 4 June 2026, covers 2020 to 2022: 'The battery pack may cause a vehicle fire, even when the vehicle is parked with the ignition in the Off position.' Both carry the same instruction, and it is worth reading in full because it describes how you would have to live with an unrepaired van: 'Owners are advised not to charge their vehicles, and to park outside and away from structures, until their vehicle is repaired.' Both remedies are the same too: update the high voltage battery pack control module software, the computer that supervises the big battery, then inspect and replace the battery pack assembly as necessary, free. For 26V-362 owner letters were mailed from 23 June 2026. The context that matters is the chain behind these. The original campaign, 22V-077, covered 2017 and 2018 vans and NHTSA's record states it 'is superseded by NHTSA recall 24V-538'. 24V-538 in turn describes itself as 'an expansion of NHTSA recall number 22V-077'. 26V-362 then applies the same remedy a third time. A used buyer should treat that as the important signal: this battery has been recalled repeatedly, so verify the latest campaign is closed on the specific VIN and get it in writing.

The 12-volt isolator post fire recall, 20V-334, and its unusual instructionsmajor

  • 3.6L Pentastar PHEV

A third fire-related campaign on the plug-in hybrid, entirely separate from the battery pack ones, and 2020 is the last model year it covers. Recall 20V-334, Chrysler code W46, covers 2017 to 2020 plug-in hybrids where 'the 12 volt isolator post located behind the driver's seat may develop high resistance', which NHTSA warns 'may result in the connection overheating, increasing the risk of a fire with the vehicle on or off.' The fix increases the torque on the post and installs a waterproof gasket, with the post and its cables replaced if they show contamination, free. The campaign record includes an instruction you will not find on any other Pacifica recall, and it explains what the engineers thought was happening: 'do not park these vehicles inside of buildings or structures, or near other vehicles. Additionally, keep liquids out of the backseat area, including but not limited to beverages, wet items, umbrellas, or bottled liquids that may leak.' In other words, spilled drinks in the second row could reach an electrical joint behind the driver's seat. In a van bought specifically to carry children and their drinks, that is worth knowing even after the repair, and it is a reason to look carefully at the carpet and trim behind the driver's seat for staining or past water ingress.

The plug-in hybrid's stalling transmission, and the warranty extensions that pay for itmajor

  • 3.6L Pentastar PHEV

The failure that runs through every plug-in hybrid year of this van. Recall 23V-010, Chrysler code 03A, covers 2017 to 2023 Pacifica plug-in hybrids where 'an internal transmission wiring connector may short circuit, resulting in an unexpected engine shutdown', which 'can cause a loss of drive power'. NHTSA's notification schedule for it named this model year specifically: owners of 2019 and 2020 vans were to be notified from 2 May 2023. The remedy is software, and it is important to understand what that software actually achieves. A mechanic explains: the update 'will help your Chrysler avoid stalling in the middle of the road. Instead, the vehicle will go into limp mode and limit speed and power to let you safely park.' It converts an abrupt shutdown into a controlled one. It does not repair the connector. The repair lives in two Chrysler warranty extensions that cover 2017 to 2023 plug-in hybrids: XE1, which states 'this bulletin involves servicing the transmission', and XN1, which states 'this bulletin involves replacing the transmission'. Both are triggered by the fault codes P0A3F, P0A43, P0A45 or P0C1A, and both note that the customer 'may also comment on the following: vehicle is in limp mode'. Neither bulletin states a mileage or year limit, so the only reliable move is to have a dealer check the VIN against both before you buy. There is also a third extension, XT1, covering high voltage battery pack replacement on 2017 to 2021 plug-in hybrids where the codes P0EDD-00, P0BBE-00 or P1C5E-00 are set.

Curtain airbag connector recall 24V-793, recorded as already fixedmoderate

Recall 24V-793, Chrysler code A8B, covers 2020 to 2023 Pacificas and some Voyagers where 'an improperly secured connector for the side curtain air bags may prevent the air bags from deploying', putting the van outside Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 214 on side impact protection and 226 on ejection mitigation. The remedy is simply to secure the connector, free, and owner letters were mailed on 22 October 2024. The useful detail is in the campaign record: Chrysler states 'all vehicles have been remedied.' On most 2020 vans this should therefore already show complete. That is a reason to confirm rather than a reason to skip the check, because a van that has changed hands several times can slip through a notification. Run the VIN and see the campaign marked closed with your own eyes.

Rearview camera recall 20V-191, fixable over the airmoderate

Recall 20V-191, Chrysler codes W30 to W37, is a broad Stellantis campaign covering 2019 and 2020 Pacificas among many other models, all fitted with 8.4 inch or 12 inch radio displays, where 'a software error can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse.' That fails Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 on rear visibility, and NHTSA's concern is that 'the lingering rearview image can distract the driver.' This is the easiest recall on the whole van to resolve: dealers will do it free, but owners can also 'choose to remotely update their software via an Over-The-Air update', which has been available since 1 May 2020. Given how simple it is, an open 20V-191 on a 2020 is a reasonable proxy for an owner who has ignored their post. Test it in the car park: shift into reverse and back out several times and watch the screen clear each time.

Loss of power brake assist, the last year of warranty extension XA7moderate

2020 is the final model year covered by Chrysler warranty extension XA7, titled 'Loss of Power Brake Assist' and spanning 2018 to 2020. A warranty extension is the manufacturer agreeing to pay for a repair after the normal warranty has expired; unlike a recall, no letter arrives and nobody raises it unless you do. The federal manufacturer-communications record for XA7 carries only that subject line, with no description of the symptom, the repair procedure, or any coverage cap in years or miles, so none of those is claimed here. What is worth doing is simple. Brake firmly from speed at least once on the test drive and pay attention to whether the pedal feels harder than it should or the assist seems to fade. If anything feels off, or the service history mentions brake work, ask a Chrysler dealer to check XA7 against the VIN before agreeing a price, because this is the last model year for which the answer can be yes.

Free programs on this year that nobody will offer youminor

The 2020 sits inside several Chrysler customer satisfaction notifications. A customer satisfaction notification is a free fix for something that annoys owners but is not a safety defect, which means it is not a recall, no letter is mailed, and the work only happens if you ask a dealer to check the VIN. The ones touching this model year are Y97, 'Hub Bolts', covering 2020 and 2021; Y40, 'Control Module Software Updates', covering 2019 to 2021 in its original form and 2017 to 2021 as revised; and ZD7, 'Radio Software Update', covering 2018 to 2021. Every one of these appears in the federal index as a subject line with no description of the symptom or the work, so we are not going to tell you what they do. We are telling you they exist and that they are free. Hub bolts in particular is the kind of subject worth raising if the van has ever had a wheel bearing or brake job, and it is a thirty-second question at a service desk.

Oil filter housing leak and the nine-speed on the petrol vanminor

  • 3.6L Pentastar V6

Two ordinary petrol-van items, neither year-specific, both worth a check on a van of this age. The oil filter housing, which mechanics also call the oil cooler, weeps at its joint with the block on the 3.6L Pentastar V6 across the whole 2017 to 2023 run. An owner-mechanic who caught his early puts the housing part at 'about 200', a dealer diagnostic estimate at '558', and a dealer replacement out of warranty at 'more than a thousand dollars'. His case for doing it promptly is a warning about consequences rather than a repair quote: run the engine low on oil and 'the engine itself is going to cost five six thousand dollars'. It is not inevitable; a 200,000-mile owner reports never having needed it. Look underneath with a torch for wet residue below the housing. Separately, the ZF 948TE nine-speed automatic, made by German supplier ZF and shared with the front-drive Jeep Cherokee and Honda Odyssey, shifts abruptly around 14 mph on many of these vans. A mechanic who investigated his own concluded 'the transmission is mechanically sound, it is not a mechanical problem with the transmission, it is simply a software control', and found 'no metal' in the fluid at 50,000 and 60,000 miles. Treat a hard shift as characteristic unless it comes with slipping or a warning light, and budget a fluid change rather than a rebuild.
