Reliability report · 2019 Chrysler Pacifica · Updated July 2026

377 complaints, a third of what the first two years drew, and the launch-year assembly faults are gone. But the plug-in hybrid picks up its own battery fire recall here, and it tells owners not to charge the van.

This is the first Pacifica year that reads like a normal used minivan rather than a cautionary tale. 338 complaints against the petrol van and 39 against the plug-in hybrid gives 377 in total, against 1,563 for the 2017. Nine recall campaigns, one of which applies only to wheelchair-converted vans. The one-off assembly defects that make the 2018 hard to recommend, the improperly welded transmission and the halfshaft that was not secured to its joint, are not on this year's list.

The story splits sharply by powertrain, and which van you are looking at matters more here than in any other year. The petrol 2019's recall list is genuinely mild: two rearview camera software campaigns, a carried-over powertrain control module replacement, and the battery ground cleaning campaign 19V-348. None of those costs anything and none of them is a walk-away.

The plug-in hybrid is a different vehicle. 2019 is the first model year covered by recall 24V-538, Chrysler code 72B, which covers 3,606 2019 to 2021 plug-in hybrids and states that 'the battery pack may cause a vehicle fire when parked, even with the ignition in the Off position.' The instruction is unambiguous: 'Owners are advised not to charge their vehicles, and to park outside and away from structures, until they are repaired.' Chrysler's own record describes it as 'an expansion of NHTSA recall number 22V-077', the earlier fire campaign on 2017 and 2018 vans. This is the same defect, recalled a second time, for a second set of model years.

Alongside it, the plug-in hybrid carries recall 23V-010, the internal transmission wiring connector short that produces the dash message owners quote over and over: 'Stop Safely Vehicle Will Shut Off Soon.' Complaints from 2019 hybrid owners describe the outcome bluntly. One, at 70,200 miles: the dealer 'diagnosed that a software update and transmission rebuild were needed.' Another, at 51,000: 'the dealership has confirmed that the transmission needs to be replaced and that it is unsafe to drive the vehicle until the transmission is replaced', followed by a wait because 'they are waiting for Stellantis to release the transmission.'

The good news on that second one is that Chrysler pays. Two warranty extensions, XE1 and XN1, cover exactly this failure on 2017 to 2023 plug-in hybrids, one by servicing the transmission and one by replacing it. Neither publishes its mileage or year limits, so the only honest advice is to have a dealer check the VIN before you buy rather than after.

Squawking

What that means: The 2019 is where the Pacifica stops being a launch-year problem. 377 federal complaints is roughly a quarter of the 2017 figure, and the transmission weld, halfshaft and control arm defects that were built into 2018 vans do not appear. Nine recalls, which is the second-lowest count in the band. What keeps it out of calmer territory is the plug-in hybrid: 2019 is the first model year of recall 24V-538, a battery pack fire campaign that instructs owners not to charge the van and to park it outside. The petrol van is a considerably easier proposition than the hybrid in this year.

Plug-in hybrid battery fire recall 24V-538, do not charge and park outside

major
  • 3.6L Pentastar PHEV

The most serious item on a 2019, and it applies only to the plug-in hybrid, meaning the version with a battery you charge from a socket. Recall 24V-538, Chrysler code 72B, covers 3,606 vehicles across the 2019, 2020 and 2021 model years. NHTSA's summary: 'The battery pack may cause a vehicle fire when parked, even with the ignition in the Off position.' The remedy begins with an instruction rather than a repair, which tells you how it was treated: 'Owners are advised not to charge their vehicles, and to park outside and away from structures, until they are repaired.' Dealers then update the battery pack control module software, the computer that supervises the big battery, and inspect and replace the battery pack where necessary, free. Owner notification letters were mailed on 6 March 2025. The sentence that matters most is Chrysler's own framing of it: 'This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 22V-077', the campaign that covered 2017 and 2018 plug-in hybrids for the same fire risk. This is not a new defect. It is the same one, reaching further into the model run. Check it by VIN and insist on documentary proof of completion, because a park-outside advisory on a family van is not something to take on trust.

The plug-in hybrid's stalling transmission, and who pays to replace itmajor

  • 3.6L Pentastar PHEV

The defining plug-in hybrid failure, and 2019 owners describe it in unusually concrete terms. Recall 23V-010, Chrysler code 03A, covers 2017 to 2023 plug-in hybrids where 'an internal transmission wiring connector may short circuit, resulting in an unexpected engine shutdown.' In the cabin that looks like a warning to pull over. One 2019 owner filed after it happened at 75 mph: 'the message Pull Over Immediately - Vehicle will Shut down Soon was displayed', three times, and the dealer found 'a software update and transmission rebuild were needed' at 70,200 miles. Another, at 51,000 miles on an interstate with two small children aboard, saw 'Stop Safely -- Vehicle Will Shut Off Soon', and reports 'the dealership has confirmed that the transmission needs to be replaced and that it is unsafe to drive the vehicle until the transmission is replaced.' Understand what the recall does and does not do. A mechanic explains: the software update 'will help your Chrysler avoid stalling in the middle of the road. Instead, the vehicle will go into limp mode and limit speed and power to let you safely park.' It manages the failure, it does not undo it. The actual repair sits in two Chrysler warranty extensions. XE1 covers 2017 to 2023 plug-in hybrids and states 'this bulletin involves servicing the transmission'; XN1 covers the same span and states 'this bulletin involves replacing the transmission'. Both require fault codes P0A3F, P0A43, P0A45 or P0C1A, and both note the customer 'may also comment on the following: vehicle is in limp mode'. Neither publishes a mileage or year cap, so verify the terms against the VIN with a dealer.

The 12-volt isolator post fire recall, 20V-334major

  • 3.6L Pentastar PHEV

A second, separate fire campaign on the plug-in hybrid, and one that is easy to confuse with the battery pack recall above. Recall 20V-334, Chrysler code W46, covers 2017 to 2020 plug-in hybrids where 'the 12 volt isolator post located behind the driver's seat may develop high resistance', which NHTSA warns 'may result in the connection overheating, increasing the risk of a fire with the vehicle on or off.' The fix increases the torque on the post and fits a waterproof gasket, with the post and cables replaced if contaminated, free. The campaign record carries its own park-outside style advisory, and one specific instruction you will not see anywhere else: 'do not park these vehicles inside of buildings or structures, or near other vehicles. Additionally, keep liquids out of the backseat area, including but not limited to beverages, wet items, umbrellas, or bottled liquids that may leak.' In a family van, that is a demanding thing to comply with. A 2019 owner's complaint from July 2020 captures the position owners were in while the remedy was still being developed: 'a vehicle fire may increase the risk of injury to occupants and persons outside of the vehicle, as well as property damage per the safety recall letter I received from Chrysler. 12-volt isolator post connection safety issue. No remedy is currently available.' A final remedy does now exist, so the question for a buyer is simply whether it was performed.

Two rearview camera recalls, and a third that arrived in 2026moderate

The 2019 is caught by three separate rearview camera campaigns, which is a lot for one model year and says something about how the Pacifica's infotainment was managed. 19V-886, Chrysler code VE2, covers 2018 and 2019 vans with the 8.4 inch display, 360-degree surround camera and seat-back screens, where 'a software error can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed on the radio after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse'. 20V-191, Chrysler codes W30 to W37, covers 2019 and 2020 vans with 8.4 inch or 12 inch displays for effectively the same lingering-image fault, and it can be done over the air rather than at a dealer. Both fail Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 on rear visibility. Then in May 2026 came 26V-327, Chrysler code 46D, covering 2019 and 2023 Pacificas where 'contamination in the central vision processing module or improper programming may cause the rearview camera image not to display'. That is the opposite failure, an image that never appears rather than one that will not go away, and the remedy is a module software update or module replacement, free, with letters expected from July 2026. All three are worth confirming by VIN, and the practical test is thirty seconds: shift in and out of reverse several times and watch the screen both appear and clear.

Battery ground and powertrain control module stalling recallsmoderate

Two carried-over campaigns that both end in the same symptom and are worth keeping straight. 19V-348, Chrysler code V53, covers 2017 to 2019 vans fitted with engine stop/start, where 'a loose battery ground connection may result in an intermittent loss of power steering assist and/or a stall.' 2019 is the last model year in that campaign. The remedy is unusually simple, and a mechanic explains it: technicians 'will just clean the ground point and install no new parts.' 18V-524, Chrysler code U87, is a very wide Stellantis campaign that reaches 2018 and 2019 Jeep Cherokees and 2018 Pacificas among many others, covering a powertrain control module that 'may be equipped with a voltage regulator chip in the circuit board that may fail, causing a stall or a no start condition', remedied by replacing the module free. Note the important distinction on this model year: a petrol 2019 that stalls is most likely one of these two, both fully covered and both cheap. A plug-in hybrid 2019 that stalls is more likely the transmission connector short covered above, which is a much bigger job.

Loss of power brake assist, and a brake cluster in the complaint filemoderate

The 2019 complaint file shows a visible cluster under SERVICE BRAKES and SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, more prominent than in the years either side of it. Chrysler published a warranty extension for a matching subject: XA7, titled 'Loss of Power Brake Assist', covering the 2018, 2019 and 2020 model years. A warranty extension is the manufacturer agreeing to pay for a repair beyond the normal warranty period, and unlike a recall nobody writes to tell you it exists. The federal record for XA7 carries only that subject line with no description of the symptom, the repair procedure, or any coverage limit in years or miles, so we will not invent any of those. What we will say is what to do about it: brake firmly from speed at least once on the test drive and pay attention to whether the pedal goes harder than expected or the assist seems to fall away. If it does, or if the service history shows brake work, have a Chrysler dealer check XA7 against the VIN before you settle on a price.

Electric power steering sticking, thinner here but not gonemoderate

The failure that dominates the 2017 and 2018 files is still present in the 2019, though no longer the runaway largest cluster it was. The description does not change: the electric power steering, the motor that assists the wheel in place of a hydraulic pump, catches and sticks as you turn, most often around the eleven or one o'clock position on a gentle highway curve, then releases suddenly and the driver overcorrects. There is no recall for it and no Chrysler warranty extension that names it. Owners on the earlier years have been filing in support of an open federal investigation, NHTSA Preliminary Evaluation PE25009, which concerns the electric power steering gear rack, and an investigation carries no obligation on anyone to fix anything or to pay for it. Because the cluster is thinner on this model year, the sensible reading is that the 2019 is less likely to have it rather than immune to it. That makes the test drive the deciding evidence rather than the model year. Get to sustained highway speed, find a curve, and make small corrections both ways.

Oil filter housing leak on the petrol vanmoderate

  • 3.6L Pentastar V6

The 3.6L Pentastar V6's most reliable wear point across the whole 2017 to 2023 run, and one where acting early is much cheaper than waiting. The oil filter housing, which mechanics also call the oil cooler, weeps oil at the joint with the block. An owner-mechanic who found it on his own van at 26,000 miles gives the figures, and they are his rather than any national average: the housing part 'is cost about 200'; his dealer's estimate 'just for looking at it is 558'; and out of warranty at a dealer 'it probably cost you more than a thousand dollars just to replace'. His argument for not putting it off is a warning about neglect rather than a repair quote: if you let it leak until the engine is starved, 'the engine itself is going to cost five six thousand dollars, so you rather waste 200 than six thousand dollars.' It is not universal. A separate owner at 200,000 miles reports 'we have not had to do the oil cooler on this yet' and thinks the oiliness he can see is just spillage from oil changes. Get underneath with a torch, find the filter housing at the front of the engine, and look for wet residue below it.

The nine-speed automatic, and free software programs worth asking aboutminor

  • 3.6L Pentastar V6

Petrol vans use the ZF 948TE nine-speed automatic, made by German supplier ZF rather than Chrysler, and shared with the front-drive Jeep Cherokee and the Honda Odyssey. Its reputation is for rough shifting rather than for failing. The mechanic who diagnosed his own van at 65,000 miles concluded 'the transmission is mechanically sound, it is not a mechanical problem with the transmission, it is simply a software control', and found 'no metal' when he drained the fluid at 50,000 and again at 60,000 miles. His management technique is resetting the adaptive transmission control module about once a month, which he calls 'very easy to do, not much of a burden'. Expect an abrupt shift around 14 mph and treat it as characteristic rather than a fault, unless it is accompanied by slipping or a warning light. Separately, Chrysler has two free software programs that touch this model year and that nobody will offer you: customer satisfaction notification Y40, 'Control Module Software Updates', covering 2019 to 2021, and ZD7, 'Radio Software Update', covering 2018 to 2021. A customer satisfaction notification is a free fix for something that is not a safety defect, so no letter arrives and you must ask a dealer by VIN. Both appear in the federal index as subject lines only, with no description of what they change, so ask rather than assume.
