Reliability report · 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe · Updated July 2026

The redesign settling down — far fewer recalls than 2021, but the 6.2L engine and 10-speed stories continue.

2022 is the fifth-generation Tahoe finding its feet. The recall count falls to four from 2021's sixteen, and the launch-year fuel, steering, and seat-belt scramble is mostly behind it. What remains is the generation's core mechanical story rather than build-quality teething.

Two items decide a 2022. If it's the 6.2L V8, recall 25V274 (2021–2024) covers the connecting-rod and crankshaft defect that causes sudden engine failure, with a 10-year/150,000-mile special coverage behind it — a completed recall is reassuring, an open one is the main risk. On the transmission, GM's 15-year/150,000-mile control-valve special coverage applies to 2022, and a 2022-specific recall (26V085) addresses a control valve that can lock the rear wheels on 10-speed trucks. The 5.3L's DFM lifter risk also rides along. Verify the engine and transmission coverage by VIN and this is a reasonable buy.

Canary status

Chirping

What that means: 172 federal complaints and four recalls — a big drop from the 2021 launch, though not a clean bill. The fifth-generation engine issues persist: the 6.2L V8 is in the 2021–2024 failure recall, and the 10-speed's control-valve wear is covered by special coverage and a 2022-specific recall. A settling year rather than a fixed one; check the engine and transmission coverage, then buy.

6.2L V8 connecting-rod / crankshaft failure — recall 25V274

major
  • 6.2L V8

On a 6.2L truck this is the item that matters. GM's recall 25V274 covers 2021–2024 Tahoes for connecting-rod and crankshaft manufacturing defects that can put debris in the oil and cause sudden engine failure, with the complaint file describing no-warning shutdowns at highway speed and metal in the oil. The remedy inspects and repairs or replaces the engine free and moves it to higher-viscosity oil, backed by a 10-year/150,000-mile special coverage. A 2022 6.2L that has passed the recall (look for the oil-spec change and a service record) is a known quantity; an unaddressed one is the main risk on the year. Confirm by VIN.

This is a 6.2L V8 problem. The 5.3L V8 and 3.0L Duramax diesel don’t share it.

10-speed transmission control-valve failuremajor

The 10-speed automatic's control valve can wear or fail, causing harsh shifting and, in the worst case, a rear-wheel lock-up — recall 26V085 (2022 gas trucks with the ETRS electronic shifter) updates the transmission-control-module software free. Separately, GM's 15-year/150,000-mile Special Coverage for 2021–2022 (from the in-service date, regardless of ownership) replaces a worn control-valve body free, with reimbursement for prior repairs. Test-drive for harsh or delayed shifts and confirm both the recall software update and the coverage window.

5.3L Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) lifter failuremoderate

  • 5.3L V8

If it's a 5.3L, the cylinder-deactivation lifter risk continues from 2021. DFM can deactivate any of all eight cylinders, and its lifters can collapse, damage the camshaft, and force a several-thousand-dollar lifters-and-cam repair — a tick, misfire, and power loss, with no recall behind it. Mechanics say it can appear anywhere from 30,000 to 100,000 miles. Cold-start and listen for a valvetrain tick; a DFM disabler (~$150) is cheap prevention.

Semiconductor-shortage feature gapsminor

Some 2022 Tahoes built during the chip shortage (roughly late 2021 on) left the factory with features disabled — GM ran Customer Satisfaction Programs for a non-functional heated steering wheel and inoperative park assist on affected builds, to be enabled once parts were available. It's a feature-level annoyance, not a safety defect, but on a 2022 it's worth confirming those features actually work and any program was completed.
