The year the hard-brake-pedal and reduced-power stories both peak — buy one with the charge-air-cooler fix done.

The 2019 is where two of the third-gen Equinox's defining problems both come to a head. The loudest cluster in the recent complaint file is the brake pedal suddenly going hard — a failing brake vacuum pump — which GM covers with a service bulletin but never a recall, so it's an owner-pays fix. Right behind it is the 1.5T 'engine power reduced' story.

The redeeming part is that GM did formally act on the reduced-power issue for 2019: an emission recall and a support program to secure the charge-air-cooler duct that disconnects under boost. Add four safety recalls (AWD fuel tank, seatback welds, brake caliper, start-stop accumulator), and the 2019 becomes buyable only when the vacuum-pump condition is ruled out and the charge-air-cooler and recall work are documented done.

This is the single loudest pattern in the 2019 recent-complaint sample: without warning the brake pedal becomes extremely hard to press and the car barely slows, often with a 'Service Brake Assist' message — several owners describe near-collisions and highway scares. GM's service bulletin (internal 10205549, diagnostic code P0557) ties it to the brake vacuum pump on 2018–2021 cars; the pump is found 'internally damaged' and replaced. Crucially, this never became a recall, so it is on the owner. Any firmness or 'brake assist' warning in the history is a must-diagnose, and on the test drive a pedal that feels unusually hard is a walk-away until a shop clears it.

"Engine power reduced" — emission recall N192271200 + program N192266090major

The 1.5T's charge-air-cooler outlet duct (intercooler-to-throttle-body pipe) can disconnect under turbo boost, triggering an 'engine power reduced' message and limp mode. Unlike other years, GM acted formally on the 2019: emission recall N192271200 (a recall filed for emissions, separate from the safety recalls) and Customer Support Program N192266090, which install a charge-air-cooler retainer kit. This is the good version of a gen-3 problem — there's a free fix on record. On any 2019, confirm the retainer/recall work was completed; a recurring reduced-power message with code P1101 means it probably wasn't.

Transmission stall, jerk, and hesitationmoderate

Owners report the car jerking and stalling at low speed — pulling away from a stop and suddenly cutting to a near-stop, or hesitating on acceleration. Some is the 6-speed's known rough-shift behavior (covered on 2018–2019 by Customer Support Program 18277 for a missing transmission cup plug); some overlaps the reduced-power condition above. A stall in traffic is a safety issue, so any drivability hesitation warrants a scan and a check of whether CSP 18277 applies.

Cooling system and coolant leaks (1.5T)moderate

As on the other gen-3 years, the 1.5T's water pump, thermostat, and coolant sensors are failure-prone, and low coolant that goes unnoticed can overheat the engine and threaten the head gasket. Watch the temperature gauge on the drive, check the reservoir, and look for weeping at the pump. It's a repair pattern, not a recall — price it into a higher-mileage example.
